Offer Description

RATIONALE AND OBJECTVES

Oniris VetAgroBio Nantes is a Public Scientific, Cultural and Professional Establishment located in Nantes (France), which depends on the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty (MASA). Oniris trains Engineers and Veterinarians, and awards Master 2 and Doctorate degrees (over 1,200 students in total).

The position of Professor of Physiology-Physiopathology is attached to the Functional, Cellular and Molecular Physiology Teaching Unit (PFBM) within the Biology, Pathology and Food Science Department (BPSA), which brings together four teacher-researchers and three support staff. Together, these staff create and run fundamental courses in physiology, pathophysiology, cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry and biotechnology, mainly for veterinary students at the beginning of their degree course (years 1 to 3).

Physiology is the foundation for the study of veterinary medicine. It is also the essential link to pathophysiology, diagnosis and the basis for functional exploration and therapy. This position will play a key role in the design and implementation of the physiology and pathophysiology courses offered at Oniris, as well as in their development in the new national and European educational context. He or she will also be involved in training 'for' and 'through' research, particularly as part of the new Graduate Programs (GP) within the 'Health Biology' and 'Drug and Health Product Sciences' Master degrees co-accredited by Oniris and Nantes University.

On the research side, this position is necessary for the organization and the innovation strategy of the IECM Research Unit (USC1383 Oniris/INRAE), which aims to understand the interactions between stress, immunity and metabolism and their consequences for human and animal health. The members of the IECM unit study in particular the effects of stress mediators on metabolism (maturation of b cells) and immunity (type 1 diabetes in humans and robustness of the immune response in pigs on farm) as well as the immunomodulatory role of extracellular vesicles (EVs). The IECM unit's research works allow the improvement of breeding practices to promote the health and welfare of pigs, as well as the development of innovative therapeutic strategies aimed at controlling diabetic disease: restoration of b function by xenograft/bio-artificial pancreas and control of the autoimmune response by EVs. The research activities of the recruited person should support and enrich his/her teaching duties.

The candidate is expected to make a strong contribution to Oniris management and to the MASA strategy, by taking on administrative responsibilities and by leading projects of general interest in line with major societal changes (ethics and well-being, higher education, agricultural technical education, One Health, etc.).

MISSIONS

- TEACHING :

The candidate will be involved in initial training, mainly for veterinary students and, to a lesser extent, engineer students, to help them acquire basic knowledge of the physiology of major functions, particularly renal physiology, reproductive physiology and endocrinology in companion, leisure and livestock species. In partnership with the teachers of other fundamental disciplines and the clinicians at the Oniris Veterinary University Hospital Centre, he or she will provide targeted teaching on the pathophysiology of the main urinary and metabolic disorders, as part of the "Semiology and Integrated Pathophysiology" courses. On the engineer side, the candidate will take part in the Integrated Health courses. The recruited person will be involved in educational innovation and will use a variety of teaching methods, taking the form of lectures, tutorials, practical works, clinical cases, written handouts and/or self-study exercises made available to students on the Connect e-learning platform. The recruited person is expected to be involved in the diversification of recruitment routes for the veterinary curriculum. Involvement in Master's level training is required, particularly within the "Healthy and pathological digestive system" courses of the Microbiota-Gut-Brain-Food-Health GP (MICAS).

- RESEARCH :

The candidate will carry out his or her research activity within Oniris' IECM unit, which is attached to INRAE's Animal Health Department (USC1383 Oniris/INRAE). He or she will have to develop a research activity centered on the study of the effects of stress mediators on immunity and metabolism in a "One Health, One Welfare" approach. The candidate will be expected to collaborate with researchers in animal health affiliated to other Oniris and/or INRAE units in a multi-disciplinary context. His/her work should contribute to the acquisition of knowledge to improve the health and welfare of farm animals, particularly pigs.

CANDIDATE’S PROFILE:

The candidate should be Doctor in Veterinary Medicine, with a PhD in Biology and hold the Habilitation to Supervise Research. He/she must have recognized experience in teaching physiology and be able to demonstrate his/her ability to drive changes in the way fundamental and preclinical disciplines are taught to future veterinarians.

As far as research is concerned, the candidate must be able to demonstrate his/her ability to secure funding for his/her own research projects, develop collaborations, publish scientific articles in international journals and supervise doctoral students. Research experience in an academic laboratory outside veterinary schools would be a plus. An interest in animal ethics would be particularly welcome. The candidate should have a perfect command of French and English, for both teaching and research activities. He or she will need to demonstrate excellent communication skills in order to integrate into a multidisciplinary team. Managerial experience is also required.
