This postdoc is part of the ERC-MAESTRO project for the study of the organization of convection in the Cape Verde region.
MAESTRO aims at understanding the radiation impact of the organization of convection on the water vapor and cloud budget, and the high sensitivity observed in climate models and higher resolution models to the organization of convection in the tropics. In this context, the marine boundary layer plays a particular role at the ocean/atmosphere interface, with processes at both a very fine scale and the possibility of sub-mesoscale coherent organizations (rolls, thermals, density currents or " cold pools” associated with convective cells…). The objective of the postdoc is to study the link between the structure of atmospheric turbulence in the sub-cloud layer and the organization of shallow or deep convection, based on the data collected during the measurement campaign which will take place in August/September 2024. In particular, the in situ measurements of the SAFIRE ATR-42 research aircraft will be used, combined with satellite data (GOES and Radsat data for clouds, SAR for sea surface conditions).

- Processing of in situ turbulence data and provision for the MAESTRO community of a level 1 processed turbulent data
- Analysis of the structure of sub-cloud turbulence, characterization of scales and organizations. Provision of a level 2 processed data.
- In-depth analysis of the link between the structure of the sub-cloud layer and the organization of convection, by combining in situ data and satellite data
- Analysis of "cold pockets" processes, triggering of convection, organization, aggregation, ocean/atmosphere exchanges, to understand the link between sub-cloud structure and organization.
- Publication of articles, participation in conferences and workshops

The recruited person will be based on the instrumented site Centre de Recherches Atmosphériques of Campistrous (Hautes Pyrénées). She/he will be integrated into the LEETCHIE team at LAERO, and will work in close collaboration with the TROPICS team at CNRM (Météo-France, Toulouse), and the EMC3 team at LMD (Institut Pierre et Simon Laplace, Paris). She/he will benefit from the research dynamics of the MAESTRO community, and from the broader and international community of the ORCHESTRA project (Convection in the Tropics).
