Offer Description

Position: EU HORIZON-funded postdoctoral position in the FlavImmunity Group

Reporting to: Giovanna Barba Spaeth, Group leader, Institut Pasteur, Paris, France

Contract: This is a full time, fixed term position (3 years) on Institut Pasteur Paris terms and conditions of employment. The position is immediately available. Applications will continue to be accepted and considered until the position is filled.

The Project: Yellow4FLAVI “Deconstructing the protective immunity of yellow fever virus 17D to inform flavivirus vaccine design” aims to identify the determinants of the immunogenicity of the yellow fever 17D vaccine based on the idea that the structure of the 17D viral particle plays a major role in the presentation of epitopes capable to induce protective immunity. The EU consortium working on Yellow4FLAVI includes 13 laboratories from 7 countries (France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, The Netherlands, Finland, Colombia) and we aspire to answer three specific open key questions: 1) How does the structure of the antigen define antigen presentation? 2) How does the early local immune response stimulate the systemic immune response? 3) What are the determinants of protection and long-lasting immunity?

The Research Group: The FlavImmunity group studies the dynamics of viral envelope proteins using a combination of structural (cryo-EM and X-ray crystallography) biochemical (BLI, chromatography) and functional (virus neutralization and fusion assays) approaches (https://research.pasteur.fr/en/team/flavimmunity/ ). We study new and re-emerging viruses of global public health concern, in particular Flaviviruses such as yellow fever, dengue, Zika or West Nile.

We value diversity, inclusion, sustainability, gender, and life/work balance.

Your role: You will be responsible for carrying out virological assay, antigen design and structural studies on whole virus using cryoEM. You will conduct your own project and interact tightly with the other researchers of the Yellow4FLAVI consortium. You will also contribute to other projects of the group. You may guide PhD and master students in their research.

Post requirements:

-       PhD in relevant discipline

-       Good knowledge in molecular and/or structural biology

-       Technical expertise in standard biochemistry techniques

-       Track record of writing papers and data presentation at scientific meetings

-       Strong drive for challenging projects, initiative, and teamwork

The Institute: The Institut Pasteur (IP) is an international life science research institute located in the heart of Paris, France. Founded in 1888 to honor the success of Louis Pasteur in developing a human vaccine against rabies, it counts 10 Nobel Laureates. It hosts about 2,000 scientists from over 60 nationalities and has four major missions: research, health, teaching, and innovation. The Institut Pasteur supports a planetary vision of scientific research as stated by the words of its founder: “Science knows no country, because knowledge belongs to humanity, and is the torch which illuminates the world.”.
