Offer Description

Liquid argon (LAr) detectors have reached an unprecedented level of development and are now used in many areas of particle physics and astroparticles. Doping LAr with xenon can further extend the fields of application, as Xe acts as a wavelength shifter and speeds up the scintillation, keeping the scalability of LAr technology almost unchanged. Xe-Ar technology can be of interest in the field of neutrinoless double beta decay, by mixing 136Xe-enriched Xe in LAr, in direct dark matter search, and in the development of pediatric Xe-doped LAr PETs. This project is dedicated to provide an extensive characterization of the Xe-Ar mixture in terms of maximum solubility, thermodynamics, and scintillation and ionization properties as a function of the Xe concentration.

Commissioning of the small-scale Time Projection Chamber (TPC) for characterizing Xe-doped LAr particle detection properties.

Participation in the data taking of both phase-diagram measurements and with TPC.

Simulation and data analysis for inferring Xe-doped LAr response model.

Supervision of PhD students and trainees.

The successful candidate will join the X-ArT consortium, an international collaboration that includes France, the United States, Italy, Poland, and the UK. The work site will be the APC laboratory (Paris), where the X-ArT group has 3 researchers (including the principal investigator of X-ArT), 2 PhD students, and a research engineer. The candidate will also be associated with CTP MINES ParisTech (Fontainebleau), where measurements for the Xe-Ar phase diagram are carried out and where the TPC will be installed.
