Offer Description

Under the supervision of the Khaybar-Prehistory project coordinator, the researcher (M/F) will be responsible for the survey, observation, and analysis of geoarchaeological, paleoenvironmental aspects, and landscape evolutions of the Khaybar archaeological site, covering an area of nearly 60 km² in western Saudi Arabia, during the Pleistocene and Holocene periods. Additionally, they will assist the coordinators in preparing field missions, both logistically and scientifically, and in managing data from excavation (database, GIS). A good understanding of environmental archaeology across all periods, preferably of the region, as well as proficiency in field and laboratory analysis techniques (particularly in arid contexts), and a strong motivation to publish scientific results promptly will be crucial criteria for the successful completion of the mission.

Technical and Scientific Activities:
- Assist the project co-directors in developing and implementing the scientific strategy.
- Supervise the excavation and analysis of geoarchaeological trenches in contexts such as wadis, paleolakes, and prehistoric and historic archaeological sites, with a minimum of three months of fieldwork per year. Lead a team composed of specialists, laborers, and multiple students.
- Conduct surveys to identify new archaeological sites or geoarchaeological sites of interest. Produce a geomorphological map of the entire study area.
- Prepare a detailed report on the results of excavations and analyses.
- Supervise the management of project documentation and archives (database, GIS).
- Contribute to the project's scientific publications (drafting or participation in drafting articles, participation in conferences, seminars).
- Assist in reviewing team reports.

Training Activities:
- Participate in training French and Saudi students in field or laboratory geoarchaeology.

Logistics:
- Contribute to preparing field missions, in collaboration with the co-directors and project manager.

The archaeological survey and excavation project in Khaybar began in October 2020 and will continue until the end of 2024. The project is co-directed by G. Charloux (CNRS, UMR-8167 Orient & Mediterranean) and R. Crassard (CNRS, UMR-5133 Archéorient), in collaboration with M. AlMushawh (Royal Commission for AlUla, RCU); it is funded by the French Agency for the Development of AlUla (Afalula, France), in partnership with the RCU (Saudi Arabia). The project aims to provide new archaeological documentation to understand human occupation and environmental dynamics in the Khaybar oasis over time. The position will be based in Lyon 7th, within the Archéorient laboratory (CNRS/Lyon 2). It will also involve travel to Paris (in collaboration with the Orient & Mediterranée laboratory) and to the Jalès branch of Archéorient in southern Ardèche. The researcher (M/F) will be required to participate in all field missions (minimum three months per year), where he/she will contribute to the organization and conduct of scientific field operations.
