Offer Description

We are offering a postdoctoral position as part of a project funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR). This project focuses on the development of artificial channels using foldamers for the efficient transport of water and/or ions. Conducted in the group of Gilles Guichard at the University of Bordeaux (CBMN & IECB Institutes, CNRS), this research combines organic and supramolecular chemistry. The group specializes in Biomimetic Chemistry of Peptides and Proteins with a general focus on designing and synthesizing synthetic molecular systems capable of precise folding and self-assembly in aqueous conditions (Nat Chem. 2015, ChemPlusChem 2020, Chem 2023) for various applications. The goal here is to synthesize urea-based foldamers with well-controlled helical conformations designed to form homogeneous nanometer-sized channel architectures, characterize their structures and study their insertion into phospholipid bilayers using various techniques; explore, and optimize the water transport properties of these systems. Such artificial water channels (AWCs) which mimic the structures and functions of natural protein channels may find applications in the fabrication of reverse osmosis membranes for desalination.

- Conduct multi-step organic synthesis in solution and on solid support.
- Perform standard purification and analysis of organic molecules.
- Carry out structural analyses and biophysical measurements.
- Measure water and ion transport through membranes.
- Prepare reports and drafts for publications.
- Present findings in group seminars.

This interdisciplinary project will be primarily conducted in the Guichard group (https://www.guichard-iecb.fr/ ), at the Institute of Chemistry and Biology of Membranes and Nano-objects (CBMN) within the European Institute of Chemistry and Biology (IECB). Located on the University of Bordeaux campus, CBMN and IECB are dynamic research centers equipped with state-of-the-art technology for physicochemical analysis (NMR, mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, etc.).

The project benefits from the complementary expertise of Mihail Barboiu's group at the European Institute of Membranes (Montpellier, France) and Marc Baaden's group at the Laboratory of Theoretical Biochemistry (Paris, France). Some biophysical measurements and structural biology studies may be conducted in collaboration with Mihail Barboiu's laboratory.
