Offer Description
Diazo compounds display extremely diverse reactivities with a high atom efficiency, offering them many applications in organic synthesis. Despite ther versatility, diazo compounds are partly renown because of their instability. To this day, most of the methods allowing their synthesis are targeted towards the most stable diazo compounds, namely the ones stabilized by an electron-withdrawing group on the adjacent carbon atom.
This project aims to develop new synthetic routes toward semi‒ and non‒stabilized diazo compounds, using simple substrates, to finally broaden their uses in organic synthesis. The project will be developped within the team "Synthèse de biomolécules fluorées" at the CARMeN Institute (UMR 6064), undr the supervision of Dr Margaux Riomet.
This project will consist in synthetic methodology for the preparation of diazo compounds. Those species will be formed and then immediately trapped (in a batch reactor for semi-stabilized diazos, in continuous flow for non-stabilized diazos). The recruited candidate will synthesize the envisaged substrates and then screen different reaction conditions to obtain diazo compounds. The obtained molecules will be identified and caracterized using standard analysis techniques (NMR, high resolution mass ...). Le mechanism at play in the transformation will also be studied.
This project is funded by the Normandy Region within the "Projet émergent" program under the acronym NorMaDiazo. It will be carried out at the CARMeN Institute (Rouen site), within the team "Synthèse de biomolécule fluorées. The team focuses on the use of emerging technologies, such as photocatalysis, electrosynthesis and flow chemistry , for the establishment of novel synthetic methods.

Eligibility criteria
Applicants must hold a PhD in molecular chemistry and have less than 2 years of post-doctoral experience. The candidate must have stong theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The recruited candidate must be rigorous, capable of proposing synthesis strategies, highly motivated, and hardworking. Experience in continuous flow chemistry is not required.
