24 months Post doctoral position in social sciences, in the Aurelia project (https://aurelia.site.ined.fr ), which investigates the field of Long-term care policies (care towards older people in need of support and care torwards people with disabilities) and explores the ways in which support for "autonomy" is organised (which corresponds to "autonomy regimes") in five different countries (France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and Canada).
The Aurelia project is led by an international, multidisciplinary research consortium. The scientific coordinator of the project is Loïc Trabut (Ined, France). The French team is composed by specialists in sociology, political science, geography, demography, law, public health, economics and medicine. They are organised into seven teams: Ined, Lise-Cnam CNRS, EHESP, EHESS, Ires, the University of Brest and Nantes University Hospital. The members of these specialist teams have a proven track record of working together scientifically and experienced in comparative work. The Aurelia international consortium partners are the University of Hamburg (Germany), the UQAM (Canada), the University of Doshisha (Japan) and the London School of Economics and Political Science LSE (UK). The members of the consortium are international leaders in their fields.
The post-doctoral researcher will be part of the French team of the project at the Ecole des hautes études en santé publique (EHESP). The EHESP-School of Public Health is a scientific, cultural and professional public institution. EHESP is a member of the network of public service schools (RESP), France Universities and the conference of Grandes écoles (CGE). EHESP is also a component institution of the University of Rennes/ As a platform for teaching and research in public health, EHESP is structured in different departments and welcomes 1,300 students or doctoral students and 7,000 trainees in professional development from 50 different nationalities and invites more than 1,000 lecturers per year.
The EHESP team of the Aurelia project is coordinated by Blanche Le Bihan and Alis Sopadzhiyan. The post doctoral researcher will work closely with the host team at the London School of Economics (LSE) in the UK, coordinated by Adelina Comas Herrera.
The post-doctoral researcher will be responsible for :
- Carrying out the survey on the notion of "autonomy" in the United Kingdom (documentary analysis of legislation and reports produced, conducting and analysing interviews with experts)
- Carrying out monographic surveys in two selected territories in the United Kingdom. He/she will be required to carry out interview surveys with local stakeholders in the implementation of support systems for the people in need of care.
He/she will also be involved in the project's reflections. In this context, he/she will have to take part in the various working meetings, as well as in the various collective productions that may result from them. He/she will contribute to the analysis of the data collected, producing reports and publishing the results in the form of scientific articles.
The recruited post-doctoral researcher will therefore carry out the following activities:
- Organisation activities
- Preparing and coordinating the fieldwork: planning and organising meetings with respondents, both for making appointments and for travel (transport, accommodation, etc.);
- Contribute to the organisation of seminars and meetings linked to the project
- Collection activities
- Literature review in English ;
- Conducting qualitative interviews in English.
- Identify appropriate texts, documents, reports etc. to investigate the notion of autonomy in the UK social care policy.
- Analysis and valorisation activities
- Appropriation and analysis of the administrative and scientific literature ;
- Analysis of qualitative interviews ;
- Drafting of a summary report based on the documentary corpus and interviews, presenting the data and systems and highlighting the specific features of the areas studied;
- Contribution to the methodology discussions
- Contribution to articles book chapters and scientific papers.
In order to carry out the survey, the researcher recruited will have to travel regularly to the UK (travel expenses covered by the project budget). The researcher will be hosted in London at the London school of economics and work with Adelina Comas Herrera.

Skills/Qualifications
PHD in sociology, political sciences, demography or related disciplines in social and human sciences
The researcher will be able to demonstrate a good command of qualitative interviewing methods. Knowledge of public support systems for people who are losing their autonomy and/or are disabled in France, and experience of comparative research, would be a plus, as would prior knowledge of the field of social and health care policies in the UK.
Specific skills:
- Required languages and level expected: She/He will be required to conduct interviews and fieldwork in English
- The job requires an aptitude for multi-skilling and teamwork,
- As well as the ability to work independently and also organisational skills
