Offer Description

Sweeping sand, anchoring plant roots in the soil or reinforcing materials with fibers are common examples of mechanical interactions between flexible fibers and rigid grains. In these cases of fluid-structure interactions, the evolution of fiber shape results from a balance between internal elastic forces and external stresses, mainly frictional forces, imposed by contacts with the grains. However, predicting the orientation and conformation of fibers in a reorganizable granular medium remains a challenge, as stress distribution is highly heterogeneous along the fiber. Grain-fiber interactions need to be studied at the contact scale in order to predict macroscopic behavior. The post-doctoral fellow will be tasked with developing and analyzing model experiments for extracting fibers from a granular medium, mainly in two-dimensional geometry.

As part of the ANR ConFiG project, we will study the extraction of a fiber from a granular medium. The post-doctoral project will focus on two-dimensional (2D) experiments to characterize (i) the shape change and (ii) the drag force on the fiber, as well as (iii) grain reorganizations when the fiber is extracted in pressure-controlled configurations. These experiments will be complemented by DEM simulations and 3D experiments from our partners. The 2D single-fiber experiment will also be extended to a fiber network mimicking the hierarchical structure of a plant root system.

The project is funded by an ANR project (ANR ConFiG, ANR-23-CE30-0032-02) and will be carried out at PMMH, ESPCI, Paris (France) with Evelyne KOLB in collaboration with two other teams: Pierre JOP (ANR Coordinator, SVI Saint-Gobain), Jean-Yves DELENNE (INRAE, Montpellier).
