Offer Description

The post-doc will be part of the project team "Mitigation and Adaptation in Cultural Heritage Landscapes: Lessons from Transhumant Pastoral Systems for Managing Novel Climate Risks", an interdisciplinary and international program funded by the Belmont Forum (2024-2026). The aim of this project is to understand how pastoral landscapes provide keys to understanding the impacts of climate change on territories. By examining the dynamics of these landscapes and pastoral systems in France, Norway and Spain, the project team will detail the climatic threats and other forms of stress affecting this intangible cultural heritage (ICH); it will also clarify the characteristics and factors enabling the adaptation of the associated socio-ecological systems, as well as the ecological and socio-cultural services they provide for local communities. The post-doctoral researcher will be in charge of fieldwork (primarily interviews and surveys of pastoralists) and research on archives in Soule, focusing on the dynamics of pastoral activities and mountain pasture landscapes. He/she will participate in the management of the project (organization of inter-team seminars in particular) and will act as a link between the different international teams involved in the project. The post-doc will work at UMR 7533 Ladyss on the Nanterre and Paris 7 sites, under the supervision of Anne Sourdril (CR CNRS), Meredith Welch-Devine (UGA-United States) and Brian Burke (Appalachian State University-United States). He/she will be required to carry out a long-term fieldwork in Soule (6 months minimum) in partnership with the post-doc on a partner project entitled "Co-producing knowledge to sustain pastoral socio-environmental systems" and funded by the NSF Dynamics of Integrated Socio-Environmental Systems (DISES) program (2023-20275).

In particular, the post-doctoral fellow will contribute to:
● understanding and analyzing the dynamics and conditions of adaptation of pastoral landscape-systems in the Basque Country in the context of socio-environmental change, particularly climatic change,
● the design of survey protocols, the conduct of interviews with farmers and inhabitants of a Souletine valley and the collection of archives on the dynamics of practices, forms of pastoral organization by local institutions and uses of the commons,
● the organization of an annual seminar bringing together the French, Spanish, Swiss, Norwegian and American teams involved in the project,
● coordinating the comparison of French, Spanish and Norwegian data,
● communication of results at project seminars and targeted conferences,
● publication of an article and a research report.

The post-doctoral fellow will be recruited by CNRS, a major French scientific research organization, and will work within the UMR 7533 Ladyss and a comparative international project. LADYSS's current research focuses on the spatial anchoring of individuals and social groups, and on the construction of action (collective and public) at different scales (local, regional and international), in a wide variety of contexts, from sparsely populated rural areas to metropolitan cores and peri-urban areas. The study of the social, political and economic changes that underpin these processes is also reflected in a more global approach to characterizing socio-environmental change.

The post-doctoral fellow will benefit from a stimulating work environment, an office, laptop and a budget to cover field expenses (between 5 and 10,000 euros).
