Offer Description

Job environment

Institut Mines-Télécom is France's leading public group of engineering and management Grandes Écoles. Comprising eight public Grandes Écoles and two subsidiary schools, the Institut Mines-Télécom leads and develops a rich ecosystem of partner schools, economic, academic and institutional partners, and players in training, research and economic development.

Mines Saint-Étienne, part of the Institut Mines-Télécom, is responsible for training, research, innovation, industrial transfer and scientific culture. With 2,500 students, 500 staff and a budget of €50 million, it has 3 campuses dedicated to the industry of the future, health and well-being, and digital sovereignty and microelectronics. It is ranked among the top 10 French engineering schools and among the top 500 universities worldwide.

Mines Saint-Etienne's 2023-2027 strategy is in line with that of Institut Mines Telecom. It aims to:

-          Support ecological, digital and generational transitions, and train the players involved,

-          Support national and European sovereignty in microelectronics and digital technologies.

To support this strategy, Mines Saint-Etienne is recruiting a post-doctoral fellow on an 18-month fixed-term contract.

The Laboratory of Informatics, Modelling and Optimization of the Systems (LIMOS) , which will be the host laboratory, is a Mixed Unit of Research (UMR 6158) in computing, and more generally in Sciences and Technologies of information and the Communication (STIC). The LIMOS is mainly connected with the Institute of the Sciences of the Information and their Interactions (INS2I) of the CNRS, and in a secondary way to the Institute of the Sciences of the Engineering and the Systems (INSIS). He has for academic supervision the Clermont Auvergne university (UCA) and the graduate school of Mines of Saint-Étienne (EMSE), and as partner establishment of Clermont Auvergne INT.

Created in 2011, the Institut Henri Fayol, a training and research center at Mines Saint-Etienne, focuses on current transformations in the digital, ecological and industrial transitions that are at the heart of the efficiency, resilience and sustainability of the industry and territories of the future. To achieve this, the institute is deploying a multi-disciplinary strategy that synergizes strong skills in mathematical and industrial engineering, computer science and intelligent systems, environmental engineering for organizations, and responsible management and innovation, in conjunction with EVS UMR 5600, LIMOS UMR 6158 and COACTIS Management Research Unit.

Within this institute, the Intelligent Systems and Informatics (ISI) department contributes to the development of models, algorithms and computer architectures for the interconnection of the physical, digital and social worlds.

Scientific context

This position is part of the LoireConnecTiD project, the aim of which is to design a hypervisor to move towards sustainable territorial governance. The aim is to use the Plateforme Territoire , one of the Institut Fayol's three technology platforms, to facilitate the design of intelligent services powered by data flows generated by the deployment of sensors on the territory.

Territorial governance presupposes the ability to collect and process heterogeneous data in order to make them available to experts who can then design decision-making tools. The PlateForme Territoire is service-oriented and has already enabled the implementation of such data processing chains. Its architecture facilitates the reusability of functionalities (collection, processing, display), thereby contributing to a transversal vision of territorial governance. In this way, the platform abolishes dependency on the verticals represented by territorial management domains (mobility, construction, waste, etc.).

The aim now is to complete this architecture with a knowledge model that will enable us to move further towards an integrated vision of territorial governance. The aim is to be able to describe the expert knowledge of the domain and the platform services enabling the management of the data linked to this expertise. Territorial governance implies taking into account a large number of domains, and the aim here is to implement a methodology for integrating new data, based on two use cases. The use cases considered (to be confirmed) are building management (hypervision of internal sensors and accessibility to public space) and public lighting management.

Tasks and activities

As part of this project, the candidate will have to carry out the following tasks in collaboration with the project partners, including:

-          Identification of relevant data and knowledge models (bibliography, expert meetings).

-          Identification of relevant metadata (bibliography, expert meetings).

-          Design of a methodology for integrating new data.

-          Identification of relevant tools for implementing the methodology.

-          Identification of tools for making the knowledge model available to users.

-          Enhancing the value of the work through high-level scientific publications.

Integration within the Plateforme Territoire will be supported by a research engineer. Missions are likely to evolve according to the needs of the department and Mines Saint-Etienne.
