Offer Description

Who we are ?

Télécom Paris, part of the IMT (Institut Mines-Télécom) and a founding member of the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, is one of France's top 5 general engineering schools.

The mainspring of Télécom Paris is to train, imagine and undertake to design digital models, technologies and solutions for a society and economy that respect people and their environment.

We are looking for a post-doctoral student to join our IT and networks department. We are looking for someone with a passion for very high-speed software networks.

In modern cloud systems and data centers, computation consolidation techniques have been proposed in order to reduce the resource usage and thus energy footprint of processing .This requires several applications to coexist in the same piece of equipment, which is generally represented by a COTS server. In this context, the offload of complex calculations to external devices (e.g., GPUs, TPUs, or clusters) is often challenging, as it may significantly slowdown the performance of the application (because of the communication latency between the components). Furthermore, it may increase the energy footprint due to the additional equipment in usage: this further increases the energy footprint of such systems, as a single COTS server has a large impact that includes all the components involved in the COTS execution cycle (e.g., cooling systems, rack switches, power supply, etc.). In this project, we quantitatively study the energy/performance tradeoff of such systems and verify that we can decrease the overall energy consumption of computation, while keeping high-speed performance. We aim at introducing the aspect of cloud networking and measurements collection, in addition to the regular service execution. We propose to adopt Kubernetes and containers as the orchestration technology, and low-level data collection tools to infer and predict the performance of the system. While automated approaches based on performance predictions have been studied via simulation, we plan to provide an experimental platform where real measurements can be collected and analyzed. Finally, a significant architectural change may be required in order to effectively tackle the energy footprint of cloud systems. It is possible to do so by offloading some of the computation on low-power embedded devices. Such devices, with a 10x smaller impact than a full-blown COTS server, may be used to process a portion of the computation, that can be decoupled following the NFV philosophy. A novel cloud architecture may consist of smaller individual COTS servers connected to miniclusters of low-power devices. Although some pa-pers have addressed the problem of VNF placement in cloud systems , the architectural challenges are still to be explored. This project will be funded by the PEPR "Réseaux du futur".

Day-to-day responsibilities

You will carry out research missions in the field of very high-speed software networks .
You will provide mentoring and tutoring services.
You contribute to the reputation of the School, the Institut Mines-Télécom and the Institut Polytechnique de Paris.

Job requirements

To succeed in this role, you must have knowledge of computer networks, virtualised systems and virtualisation technologies.
If you have experience of energy efficiency issues in high-performance systems and experience of network measurements (traffic generation, devices under test, etc.) this would be a plus.
You must be fluent in English and have a PhD or equivalent.
If you enjoy programming in C, C++ or Python, come and join us!

Why join us?
You'll be working in a fast-growing, pleasant, green and accessible environment (especially for people with disabilities) just 20 km from Paris (RER B and C suburban train lines, close to major roads, shared shuttle departing from Porte d'Orléans). You will benefit from :

  • 49 days annual leave (CA + RTT)
  • flexible working hours (depending on department activity)
  • telecommuting 1 to 3 days/week possible
  • 75% public transport pass reimbursement
  • Proximity to numerous sports facilities, concierge service, underground parking, in-house catering, etc.
  • Staff association at school and ministry level
  • Good to know: our social security contributions are lower than in the private sector
