Offer Description
A 3-year post-doctoral contract (1 year renewable twice) is available in the Morphogenesis of Brown algae team (http://igfl.ens-lyon.fr/equipes/b.-charrier-morphogenese-des-algues-bru… ).
The overall aim of the project is to identify the factors that control the change in the orientation of cell division during the development of brown algal embryos. The post-doc project consists in 3D quantitative mapping of cellular factors like cell shape, cell mechanics and intracellular components (e.g. cytoskeleton, organelles) during the formation of 3D tissues in the embryos of four brown algae. Cellular data will also be used in mechanical models aiming to simulate the changes of cell division orientation within brown algae tissues (in collaboration with physicists and modellers).
1. In vitro culture of algae (microscopic, in Petri dishes), production of algal embryos, treatment with drugs and phytohormones, osmotic treatments. In sterile conditions.
2. Optical imaging (confocal, light sheet, two-photon) on live and fixed embryos
3. Microfluidics
4. Laser ablation
5. Microinjection
6. Single-cell transcriptomics using laser capture microdissection
7. Presenting work at conferences and writing articles
The Institute of Functional Genomics of Lyon (IGFL; http://igfl.ens-lyon.fr/igfl/presentation-igfl ), based on the campus of the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (ENS-Lyon), in the city of Lyon in Mid-south-east France, devotes all its energy in the study of the evolution of developmental and physiological mechanisms with a strong focus on integrative, organism-level research using a diversity of model and non-model organisms.
The institute is composed of 13 research teams (11 at present and 2 more in September 2024) sharing a common vision of science and interest in integrative and multidisciplinary experimental approaches empowered by scientists with diverse profiles and expertise (development, cell biology, molecular biology, evolution, physiology, computational biology and physics). This multidisciplinary diversity makes the IGFL a unique and highly stimulating research environment.
The team hosting the position is “Morphogenesis of Brown Algae” http://igfl.ens-lyon.fr/equipes/b.-charrier-morphogenese-des-algues-bru… . ORCID: 0000-0001-5721-1640

Eligibility criteria
The candidate will have a PhD, a solid experience in optical imaging (confocal, and possibly bi-photonic and/or light sheet) and knowledge of quantitative image analysis software. She/he knows how to handle multicellular organisms in sterile conditions and can follow their life cycle in vitro. Experience in microinjection would be appreciated. She/he is eager to understand the mechanisms that control tissue formation during embryogenesis, and is interested in the mechanical processes involved. As the project requires major technical developments such as microinjection, long-term imaging and microfluidics set-ups, the candidate will need to have a high degree of autonomy, initiative and a strong taste for exploring and developing new methods.
Additional comments
This contract is part of the "ALTER e-GROW: Strategies of 3-D growth in brown algae" project funded by the European Research Council (ERC-Advanced; 2023-2028).
The contract is for one year, renewable twice.
The deadline to apply is 10 April 2024.
