Offer Description

Preparation and monitoring of the “POSITIVE” participatory science project which consists of offering high schools in Normandy the possibility of carrying out a physics experiment using a beam from the GANIL installation.

- Promote the scientific project to the rectorate and high schools
- Develop the project's communication supports in collaboration with the DÔME
- Mobilize project partners (National Education, Region, etc.)
- Establish a catalog of questions and experiments for high school students in partnership with high school teachers and laboratory teams
- Launch the call for projects: organization of days in high schools
- Monitor applications, organization of experience presentation day
- Organize meetings with GANIL teams to refine the project
- Prepare and carry out the winning experiment

The “Large National Heavy Ion Accelerator” is a national research infrastructure based on the use of ion beams. His areas of research are fundamental research in nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics, the study of materials under irradiation and nano structuring, molecular collisions and the interstellar medium, radiobiology and imaging and therapy techniques of certain cancers. GANIL (around 300 people) is located in France, on the future EPOPEA science and innovation park site of the city of Caen la Mer. It is managed jointly, within an Economic Interest Group (EIG) by the Atomic Energy Commission (CEA/DRF) and by the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS/IN2P3). As a research infrastructure, GANIL serves a national, European and international scientific community of a thousand users.

The recruited person will be assigned to the Physics Division made up of scientific and technical groups whose mission is to host the experiments carried out at GANIL and its own research and R&D programs.
It will be placed under the responsibility of the PHASE group leader (Physics of HeAvy and SuperhEavy nuclei) composed of six permanent physicists, four doctoral students, a post-doctoral student and visitors.
The “POSITIVE” project is part of a desire to promote culture and the scientific approach to the general public.
The teams of high school students will be asked a question that will push them to submit an experimental project. This project will be evaluated in the same way as a real experiment proposal. The project will consist of carrying out a measurement with a precise objective; there will be the question to define, the operating procedure to imagine to answer the question and a timetable to establish, all in English. The project will be submitted to an experience committee and will then be evaluated during a public session by experts from GANIL, CIMAP and LPC Caen as well as members representing the partners (the Dome, the Rectorate). At the end of the presentation, a project will then be chosen and will thus the students, that presented it, will have the privilege to carry out their experiment.
