Offer Description

We are looking for a applicant (M/F) with a keen interest in questions relating to the research themes "Physics of chiral cholesteric liquid crystals: design, optics and structure" and "Biological liquid crystals and their biomimetic versions".
The experimental methods of the project include a major effort in the physical elaboration of cholesteric samples with complex twist by soft matter techniques, spectrophotometry, advanced optical microscopy and image analysis.
The postdoctorate's work will be to create artificial versions of cholesteric liquid crystal films featuring singular twisted structures. These development assignments will be accompanied by studies of the optical properties of the biomimetic films and their small-scale structure, using electron or near-field microscopy, in collaboration with experts in the field.

The postdoctorate's work will involve creating artificial versions of singular twisted structures with: non-monotonic helical pitch; variable orientation of the symmetry axis; double helicity; a combination of several of these geometries. The postdoctorate will carry out various optical characterizations of the materials developed, as well as studies of their structure.

The postdoctoral researcher will be recruited by UniCA (Université Côte d'Azur) within the context of the IDEX Systèmes Complexes France 2030 Academy of Excellence, which supports the supervisor of the project.
The research theme led by the principal supervisor, Michel Mitov, Director of Research at CNRS, combines concepts from liquid crystal physics, chiral liquid crystal optics, the relationship between optical properties and material structure elucidated by complementary microscopies (SEM, TEM, AFM), biological cholesterics and biomimetic liquid crystals. As a member of the Complex Photonic Materials and Systems team, the postdoctoral researcher will benefit from the expertise of researchers specializing in ultrafast optics, nanophotonics and analysis of the physical properties of optical materials developed to meet the challenges of modern photonics.
At the end of the postdoctoral period, the researcher will be able to master the complete chain: design of optical films of complex-twist liquid crystals, elucidation of their chiro-optical properties and their structure determined by complementary microscopies, by himself and in relation with specialists in the field. As the work progresses, the researcher will be able to familiarize himself with the prototyping aspects in collaboration with specialists in optical sensors and robotics. The project is a multi-faceted subject, the results of which are likely to lead to a topical applied problem, the guidance of a fleet of autonomous vehicles, with a strong potential for valorization in academic and industrial circles.

Additional Information
Eligibility criteria

The applicant must have a keen interest in experimental work and be persevering. The applicant will be both autonomous and communicative, combining his (her) curiosity with a solid background in physics, physical chemistry or materials science. Previous knowledge and experience in the physics or chemistry of soft matter is a strong asset. Knowledge of liquid crystal science is a plus, but not essential (the supervisor will provide appropriate conceptual and experimental training). Previous experience of quantitative research methods and practical laboratory work will be beneficial. A good knowledge and understanding of the physics and chemistry of materials, spectrophotometry and light-matter interactions is also a plus.
