Instrument Co-responsible SALSA

5-year fixed-term scientist position

Core mission
SALSA is the ILL’s stress imager dedicated to the determination of mechanical stresses in a broad range of applications in terms of components and materials. It is designed for diffraction measurements on “real” engineering components and optimised for stress determination in metallic materials.

Your tasks
Working within the Diffraction Group, you will act as ‘Instrument Co-responsible’ for the diffractometer SALSA. In addition to actively pursuing your own programme of research, you will be responsible for:

  • Co-developing SALSA as well as acting as Local Contact for the instrument
  • Managing the instrument, participating both in its day-to-day running and its technical development
  • Providing support to users for scientific experiments and helping them collect data under optimum conditions
  • Promoting scientific partnerships in your field of research
  • Participating in the longer term development of sample environment and data analysis
  • Working within the Diffraction team (Instrument Scientists, Scientific Collaborators, Engineers, Software Developers) and with scientists and other ILL staff members to develop a strong scientific programme using SALSA
  • Promoting and supporting the use of SALSA by industrial partners.

Skills/Qualifications

Your profile

  • You have a PhD in physics, materials science or engineering (or equivalent) focussing on applied or industrial research.
  • Strong scientific background and expert knowledge of diffraction and residual stress analysis methods.
  • Some crystallographic background and interest that drives you to use powder diffraction or single crystal methods to investigate crystal structure and microstructure and phase composition and to monitor transitions in in situ experiments.
  • Scientific and technical interests ranging from strain imaging to mechanical engineering.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills allowing you to collaborate easily with different communities, such as fundamental scientists, on the one hand, and industrial customers, on the other.

This post represents an excellent opportunity for a scientist to develop his/her expertise, broaden his/her experience and interact with leading scientists from around the world.
Applications would also be welcomed from experienced scientists able to obtain a secondment period from their home institution.
