Institut Curie is a key player in the fight against cancer, combining an internationally renowned Research center with a state-of-the-art Hospital complex. Founded in 1909 by Marie Curie, Institut Curie brings together more than 3 700 researchers, doctors and caregivers at three sites (Paris, Saint-Cloud and Orsay) to carry out three missions: research, care, and the preservation and transmission of knowledge. Institut Curie is a private foundation recognized as a public interest institution. The Curie model, with its continuum from research to care, is now being applied in its modern form through its Curie 2030 strategic project.

The Research center develops fundamental research of excellence designed to meet major scientific and technological challenges and push back the frontiers of knowledge. It creates an environment that fosters interdisciplinarity and interactions between researchers and caregivers, a source of innovation in the field of oncology.

The Research center employs around 1 250 people of 77 nationalities. Research work is organized into 6 thematic areas:

  • Chemical biology, Medicinal chemistry and Innovative therapeutics
  • Tumor microenvironment, Immunology, Immune & Cell therapies
  • Computational biology and Systems medicine
  • Developmental biology and Pediatric oncology
  • Genome biology
  • Cell biology and Physics of living systems

The Research center is structured into 13 joint research units (CNRS, Inserm, universities), comprising 86 research teams, 1 translational research department and 19 cutting-edge technology platforms .

Research activities are supported by the Research center's support teams for financial aspects, human resources, project funding, health & safety and technical services. Additional support is provided by the Institut Curie's head office departments for communications, tech transfer, legal expertise, IT services, etc.

The Director of the Research center oversees all the Research center's research and support activities, steers its scientific strategy and represents the Research center externally. He/She promotes the visibility of the Research center and, more broadly, of Institut Curie in France and abroad. The Director fosters scientific excellence in line with the Curie 2030 strategic project, particularly in the scientific and medico-scientific fields.

To this end, he/she is assisted by a deputy director and an administrative team of around 70 people.

In addition to his/her institutional duties, the Director of the Research center will have the opportunity to develop his/her own research. Depending on his/her profile and existing links with the Research center teams, his/her research team will be based in one of the existing units.

The candidate should be a top-level life scientist with international recognition, a track record of excellence in basic research and a strong interest in interdisciplinary approaches and biomedical applications.

Significant managerial experience in strategic positions or at the helm of research organizations is essential.

The applications received will be examined by a selection committee, which will hold interviews with the successful candidates. The Director of the Research center will then be appointed by the Executive Board after receiving the approval of the Supervisory Board, the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, the International Scientific Council and the Scientific Commission. The appointment will be for a renewable 5-year term.

The preferred starting date is June 1, 2024.
