Job environment:

INSA Rennes is the largest public engineering school in Brittany. It welcomes 2040 students and apprentices. More than 340 engineers, 60 masters students and 40 PhDs graduate each year. With 9 teaching departments, including 7 engineering specialities and 1 apprenticeship, and 6 research laboratories, INSA employs around 540 public-sector staff (teacher-researchers, lecturers, administrative support staff) and more than 70 part-time employees from companies.

Communications networks and digital infrastructures are the backbone of the digital transformation of our industry and society. As the medium for transmitting and processing information, digital infrastructures are present in all areas of industrial applications, from autonomous cars and intelligent cities to the entertainment sector, health, space, defence and energy management. In this respect, the telecommunications sector is a key area of national and European sovereignty.

However, the digital infrastructure sector faces a number of challenges:

  • initial training and apprenticeship capacities are insufficient,
  • Continuing training needs to be stepped up to adapt to rapid technological change,
  • The training of high-level scientific and technical profiles is needed to anticipate the design and deployment of new technologies.
  • The training of high-level scientific and technical profiles should make it possible to anticipate the design and deployment of the networks of the future, so as to ensure French sovereignty in a key area,
  • The deployment of these technologies in private networks (particularly in organisations of vital importance) will increase the need for trained resources to maintain these networks in operational conditions,
  • The range of telecoms training courses on offer must become more visible if it is to have a significant impact on the sector, particularly by incorporating energy constraints as a design criterion. Communication networks and digital infrastructures can help to meet some of the challenges posed by climate change, such as regulating road traffic, but they also need to address the value chain in a context of digital sobriety.
  •

The Intelligent, Secure, Sovereign and Sustainable Networks (RIS3) project aims to maintain a very high level of expertise in the design of the networks of the future and disruptive communications techniques in order to maintain significant know-how in France in this key sector. In this context, the CMA RIS3 project, led by INSA Rennes and bringing together a consortium of 7 courses from the University of Rennes 1 and CentraleSupelec, has set itself 6 actions:

1: Create a university research school to give greater visibility and structure to the range of courses on offer in telecommunications and digital infrastructures, and to train experts in the design of the networks of the future.

2, 3 and 4: Train students from Bac+3 to Bac+5 and apprentices in intelligent, secure, sovereign and sustainable networks, particularly in dual expertise (security, AI, data) and in the impact of digital infrastructures on sustainable development, particularly with regard to the life cycle of network elements.

5: Train professionals in the development of new skills specific to 5G, encompassing issues of sustainability and security.

6: Strengthen the attractiveness of the sector by setting up actions aimed at high school students, attracting talent and highlighting examples of female careers.

Within INSA, the implementation of the RIS3 project in terms of training will focus on setting up a university research school and offering continuing education and apprenticeships.

    Teaching

The person recruited will mainly be involved in the E&T department, but also in apprenticeship training in Electronics - Embedded Systems and Telecommunications (E-SET). He or she will be responsible for participating in the RIS3 project, including setting up training courses in the RIS3 university research school and in the RIS3 continuing education courses to be created. He or she will also be involved in monitoring E-SET apprentices, liaising with INSA's partner companies. Teaching will include lectures, practical work (TP) and tutorials (TD), as well as digital content, on methods and algorithms for the physical layer of communications systems. New courses will also be offered on energy-efficient networks, the energy cost of information transmission, including the life cycle of network equipment, and aspects of physical layer security.

    Research

Host laboratory: Institut d'Electronique et des Technologies du NuméRique (IETR - UMR 6164) - https://www.ietr.fr .

Host team: SIGNAL (SIGnal processing and ALgorithms)

IETR is a public research laboratory specialising in electronics and digital technologies. Structured into 13 thematic research teams, the work carried out addresses a wide range of scientific challenges, mainly linked to the digital transformation of society, but also to its transitions in terms of the environment, ecology, energy and health.

The SIGNAL team conducts research into multidimensional signal processing for communications, communications and information theory, software-defined radio and the waveforms of communicating systems. These different approaches are developed to ensure high flexibility and efficiency in communications in terms of throughput, connectivity, responsiveness, quality of service, security, robustness, exploitation of available resources, mobility and service availability.

Each year, the position includes half-time research dedicated to the RIS3 project. In the first year, a teaching leave is granted, reducing the service to 48 HETD per year, in order to work as effectively as possible on RIS3 research and the setting up of RIS3 training courses.

    Research profile

The teacher-researcher (EC) recruited will play a central role in developing the skills of the IETR's SIGNAL team in its research activities in the field of signal processing for the physical layer of digital communications systems.

A major focus of the activities will be the modelling and study of the energy cost/eqCO2 of information transmission in a massively multi-antenna network, using intelligent reconfigurable surfaces to control the propagation environment. He will develop energy consumption models that take into account all or part of the life cycle of network components, in particular those at the radio interface. The CE will work on the overall optimisation of these systems by developing different areas of constraint, such as latency/reliability (URLLC concept), sporadic communications (short packets), energy consumption (green radio) and security (cybersecurity).

    The skills sought include

    - Multi-dimensional signal and image processing (MIMO systems)

    - Mathematical tools for modelling, optimisation and machine learning

    - Information and communication theory

    - Physical layer security

    Administrative tasks

The person recruited will be involved in the RIS3 project, as well as in continuing education and apprenticeships linked to the project. In particular, he/she will be involved in recruiting candidates for the training courses and in promoting the project. Administrative and teaching responsibilities will be taken on gradually and in consultation with the RIS3 project leader.
