The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Turku invites applications for the position of University Teacher in English at the Department of English in the School of Languages and Translation Studies. The position will be filled as fixed-term employment for 1.1.2023–31.12.2023. This is due to substitution.

The Department of English is part of the School of Languages and Translation Studies. The School is an active, diverse and international centre for teaching and research on languages studies. We educate researchers, translators, teachers, and language specialists for various specialist professions nationally and internationally.

The areas of strength of the Department of English are discourse linguistics, historical and philological studies of English, postcolonial literary studies, studies in second language acquisition and translation studies (especially history of translation, language and translation technology, and translation as profession).

Position of University Teacher

In accordance with the university research career model, the position of university teacher is a second-stage career position. The eligibility criteria for prospective applicants are defined in the University of Turku’s rules of procedure. Prospective applicants for the position of university teacher must hold an appropriate MA degree and have good teaching skills.

The university teacher takes part in teaching the subject in the Bachelor of Arts Degree level (basic and intermediate studies in English) and in the Master of Arts Degree level (advanced Studies in English). The following Master’s degree programmes in the University of Turku train English-language specialists: the Degree Programme in Language Learning and Teaching, the Degree Programme in Multilingual Translation Studies, and the Language Specialist Degree Programme. The university teacher will teach courses especially in translation studies, language and translation technologies and possibly in linguistics and language skills. The university teacher will participate in the development of the Department’s teaching and research, the student admission process, administrative tasks, and is also expected to actively pursue independent scientific research.

Qualifications and requirements

Success in the post of university teacher requires a relevant MA degree, ability to give high-quality university level teaching based on research in translation and English studies, excellent proficiency in English and Finnish, and good communication skills. During the assessment of the merits of the applicants in scientific work, expertise in the field, teaching experience and pedagogical education, ability to produce study materials and other teaching merits will be taken into account as part of the process. The candidates may also be interviewed.

Salary and trial period

The salary for the position is determined on the basis of job demand assessment levels 4–6 of the university salary system for teaching and research personnel, where the task-specific salary component is between 2628,85–3549,72 € per month. A component that is based on personal performance is also paid in addition to the task-specific salary, and this component is min. 6% of the task-specific salary.

The position includes a 6-month trial period.
