University Lecturer (Sustainable Urban Development), 3 positions

Tampere University will introduce a new International Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Sustainable Urban Development in autumn 2020. The bachelor’s programme will provide students with multidisciplinary expertise to address sustainable development challenges and with discipline-specific knowledge to prepare them to pursue a master's degree. The programme will be administered by the Faculty of Management and Business, the Faculty of Built Environment and the Faculty of Social Sciences.  

The University is inviting applications for three (3) university lecturer positions. The anticipated start date will be 2 September 2019. The successful candidates will be hired on a permanent basis. One university lecturer will be appointed to each of the three faculties mentioned above. 

Job description

The responsibilities of the university lecturer (sustainable urban development) will include: 

  • plan and develop the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Sustainable Urban Development in collaboration with other staff and develop lecturer's faculty's international and multidisciplinary degree programs
  • plan and teach courses, especially those included in the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Sustainable Urban Development 
  • provide academic supervision to students enrolled in the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Sustainable Urban Development who are writing their bachelor’s thesis  
  • build relationships with external stakeholders and support students’ transition into working life 
  • promote collaboration between degree programmes across the University and with other national and international stakeholders  


Candidates must have a doctoral degree and an extensive track record in urban and/or sustainable development. We also expect candidates to have sound knowledge of the development of the built environment, administrative sciences or social sciences. 

When reviewing applications, we will consider candidates’ experience and accomplishments relating to higher education pedagogy and pedagogy in general. The position of university lecturer is teaching-oriented but research merits relating to sustainable urban development will be appreciated. 

Excellent command of English is required as the degree programme is taught in English. Team working and interactional skills are also required.  

We offer

The successful candidates will be hired on permanent basis. The anticipated start date will be 2 September 2019 or as agreed upon between the parties. Appointment will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a trial period of 6 months.

Salaries are based on the Finnish University Salary System. The preliminary job demands level will be 6-7. In addition, employees will receive performance-based pay.
