The University of Helsinki Faculty of Arts  is Finland’s oldest and largest unit of teaching and research in the arts in terms of the organisation and selection of its disciplines. The Faculty is also a significant international community of research, education and culture. The Faculty of Arts carries out research and teaching in the languages and literatures of Europe and other parts of the world, totalling close to 40 languages. In addition, a general theory of linguistics, translation studies and comparative literature is being developed.

The Faculty of Arts invites applications for the position of 

UNIVERSITY LECTURER OF THE STUDY OF RELIGIONS for a fixed term appointment from 1 August 2024 to 31 December 2026.

The study of religions focuses on the ethics and spiritual traditions of people as part of culture and society, both past and present. Research in the field utilises the approaches and research methods of anthropology, history, cultural studies, psychology and sociology, among others. A broad-based scholar of religion with evidence of success in research and teaching is sought for the position. Furthermore, the successful applicant will have research methodological skills that can benefit cultural research more broadly. The position is in the Department of Cultures.

The appointee’s duties will include teaching according to the degree requirements at all levels of both undergraduate and postgraduate studies, as well as the supervision and examination of theses. Duties requiring good cooperation skills include participating in the planning and development of teaching together with the other staff of the department, degree programmes and discipline. The appointee will conduct research in the field and contribute to its development.

Requirements for the position and assessment of qualifications

According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a university lectureship must hold an applicable doctoral degree and be able to both provide high-quality teaching based on research and supervise theses. When assessing applicants’ qualifications, attention will be paid to both scholarly and teaching qualifications. Scholarly qualifications include scholarly publications and other research results of scholarly value. When assessing teaching qualifications, attention will be paid to teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration.

Pursuant to the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009), appointees to teaching and research positions at the University must be proficient in the language in which they provide instruction, i.e., Finnish or Swedish. The primary language of instruction in the present position is Finnish. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have excellent skills in English. If the successful applicant is not proficient in Finnish, they are expected to acquire sufficient proficiency within a reasonable period of time. Support for studying the language will be provided. What we offer

The salary will be based on levels 5–7 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The appointee’s gross monthly salary will range from €3,800 to €4,800, depending on their previous experience. The position includes a six-month trial period.
