The Faculty of Arts at the University of Helsinki is the oldest and largest teaching and research unit in the humanities in Finland in terms of its disciplinary structure and range of subjects. It is also a major international research, education and cultural community.


Staff members in the Faculty of Arts study and teach languages and literatures of Europe and the rest of the world, in total almost 40 languages. They also develop general theories of linguistics, translation and literary studies. The staff are highly international.

The Faculty of Arts invites applications for the position of

UNIVERSITY LECTURER OF ENGLISH PHILOLOGY
for a fixed-term substitute appointment (1 August 2024 – 31 December 2026). The duties of the position include research, teaching and supervision of theses in the field of English language. The position will include a trial period of six months.

The duties of the appointee will include research in the field of English linguistics, participation in the acquisition of research funding, the provision of teaching based on research, the supervision and examination of theses, as well as contribution to the planning and development of teaching and other jointly agreed duties in academic administration. The appointee will also act as Academic Advisor (HOPS). The University lecturer will be responsible for the provision of teaching in the BA Programme in Languages and the English Studies MA Programme.


APPOINTMENT CRITERIA

According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a University Lecturer position shall hold an applicable doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as to be able to provide high-quality teaching based on research, develop teaching on the basis of research and supervise theses and dissertations.

The appointee must have excellent skills in English. In addition, Finnish language skills are required in order to successfully attend to the duties of the position and to participate in the university community’s activities.

Pursuant to the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009), appointees to teaching and research positions at the University must be proficient in the language in which they provide instruction, i.e., Finnish or Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. If the successful applicant is not proficient in Finnish, they are expected to acquire sufficient proficiency within a reasonable period of time. Support for studying the language will be provided. When assessing applicants’ qualifications, attention will be paid to both scholarly and teaching merits. Scholarly qualifications include scholarly publications and other research results of scholarly value. Teaching qualifications include teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration.


WHAT WE OFFER
The University of Helsinki offers the appointee a first-class research and teaching environment as well as the conditions required for international collaboration. The salary will be based on levels 5 to 7 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The appointee’s gross monthly salary will range from €3,800 to €4,800, depending on their qualifications and experience.
