As a part of the Faculty of Science, the Department of Chemistry has a broad research profile. International level research is carried out in three research programs: materials chemistry, synthesis and analysis, and molecular science. The Department operates on an annual budget of 20 million euros and reports more than 200 FTE person-years per annum. The Department has 16 tenured professors, 1 tenure-track associate professor and 1 tenure-track assistant professor. Sustainability and sustainability science are at the core of research in the Department of Chemistry Current research topics and include biomass as well as fundamental and theoretical aspects of climate research and carbon cycle chemistry, ranging from CO2 capture to catalysis research. To strengthen the central role of chemistry in these timely topics and the upcoming Bachelor’s Programme in Sustainability (UNA Europa),

the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki invites applications for a

UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN CHEMISTRY AND SUSTAINABILITY

The duties of the university lecturer include teaching and teaching development and coordination at the Bachelor level within the upcoming Una Europa Joint Bachelor’s Programme in Sustainability, for which the Department of Chemistry and Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) will lead a combined study track on Chemistry, Climate, and Physics. Una Europa is an alliance of 11 European universities, which will build a fully integrated curriculum for the Programme and jointly award the degrees (https://www.una-europa.eu ). Teaching at the graduate level in our M.Sc. programmes, such as the Master's Programme in Chemistry and Molecular Sciences and Master's Programme in Materials Research is also desirable. This new position will be situated in the Department of Chemistry and will be closely associated with the Department of Physics and INAR. Teaching will be carried out at the Faculty of Science’s Kumpula Campus in Helsinki. The university lecturer also participates in the supervision of Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral theses. As the field develops rapidly, the university lecturer is expected to actively follow the advancements of the field in the scientific and professional spheres, and to participate in national and international working groups.

In terms of research, the aim of this position is to strengthen experimental research on sustainability with a focus on inorganic and materials chemistry. Examples of research themes include catalysis, clean energy generation and storage, materials recycling, green chemistry, and
green materials. Specific research topics can be e.g., fossil-free chemistry, renewable energy, nanocatalysis, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, solar-driven chemistry, water splitting, batteries, nanomaterials synthesis and recovery, solar cells, fuel cells, urban mining, wastewater treatment and monitoring, among others. In general, we are looking for chemistry research that has a strong impact on sustainability.

The appointee to a university lectureship holds an applicable doctoral degree. We are looking for candidates with demonstrated experience in international collaboration and project coordination. When assessing the qualifications of the applicants, attention is paid to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration. Experience in collaboration with stakeholders outside academia and science outreach are considered as merits.The candidate must be fluent in English, knowledge of Finnish is considered a merit.

What do we offer?
The position is fixed term for 5 years including a trial period of 6 months. The salary is based on the salary system of Finnish universities. The salary range is from 4000 to 4800 euros per month.
