The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (ENS) at Tampere University (TAU) is inviting applications for a fixed-term (5 years) position of University Lecturer in Biotechnology at Materials Science and Environmental Engineering unit. Job description

We are seeking highly motivated and accomplished candidates for teaching in Industrial Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology in Bio and Circular Economy research environment. The courses in biotechnology cover a wide range of topics including molecular biotechnology, synthetic biology, and industrial microbiology and your teaching areas may focus, for example, on synthetic biology, bioprocess, biocatalysis, and/or molecular biotechnology. We strongly welcome applicants who strengthen our current profile in industrial biotechnology and synthetic biology. Your background is taken into consideration in the assignment of the specific teaching areas.

You will participate in the execution of the curriculum in collaboration within our unit.  You are expected to prepare and teach courses, supervise BSc and MSc theses, and act as a personal tutor for the students. You will have an opportunity to work in our multidisciplinary and international environment, where we appreciate the scientific relevance of the curriculum, the development of teaching methods, and learning experience of the students. We have modern teaching and research facilities, and we encourage employees to actively seek professional growth, for example, by attending pedagogical training programs available at TAU. Although the position is teaching oriented, you are encouraged to participate in research as well. 


Candidates for the position of University Lecturer must hold an applicable doctoral degree and possess the ability to provide high quality teaching and guidance based on research, including 10 ECTS of university pedagogical studies or appropriate teaching competencies presented in the teaching portfolio. A track record of independent scholarly and publishing activity is also required. We especially appreciate practical expertise in the field of the position. 

Proficiency in English is required to provide high-quality education and academic supervision to students who are working within our international campus community. Proficiency in Finnish is appreciated as some of the teaching duties may include teaching and supervising students in Finnish.

When evaluating the qualifications of candidates, we consider practical experience (including research) in the field of the position and relevant teaching experience.

We offer

The position will be filled on a fixed term basis (September 2022 – August 2027, start date is flexible). A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary is based on job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of University Lecturer is placed on job demand levels 6-7. In addition, employees receive performance-based salary. A typical starting salary for University Lecturer is approximately 4 200 – 4 600 Euro a month.
