The Department of Geosciences and Geography at the Faculty of Science is the leading research and education unit in its field in Finland. In addition to research in geology and geography, research into seismology and official duties in the field of seismology is carried out at the department. The staff at the department numbers some 100.

The Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki is seeking
A UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN GEOGRAPHY

from the 1 January, 2020. The duties of the appointee to the universitylectureship will include the development and maintenance of the urban geography module at the University of Helsinki together with professors in the field. Research and teaching emphasise a multidisciplinary approach and extensive methodological skills. The appointee’s teaching duties will include instruction in the quantitative methods of geography, and he or she must have experience in the use of such methods based on research. The university lecturer will teach geography courses for the following degree programmes:
- Bachelor’s and Master’s Programmes in Geography
- Master’s Programme in Urban Studies and Planning (USP)
He or she will contribute to the planning and provision of field courses and other courses; supervise theses and dissertations, particularly bachelor’s theses; publish actively, particularly in international series; and participate in applications for external funding and the development of the relevant department’s research groups with the aim of promoting, in particular, the use of extensive registers and statistical data. The university lecturer must engage actively in research work, related public engagement and the maintenance of networks. The university lecturer must also complete other tasks assigned by the department or the degree programmes in geography.

In accordance with the regulations of the University of Helsinki, candidates are expected to have a doctoral degree in the discipline and the ability to give high-quality instruction based on research, and to supervise theses. When assessing candidates, their scientific publications and other research results with scientific merit will be considered. Further, the teaching experience and pedagogic education of candidates, skills in producing teaching material, other merits within teaching, and a teaching demonstration if necessary will be considered. Other merits include a wide knowledge of research methods, the ability to develop methods, and experience with instruction in quantitative methods.
According to the university legislation, the university lecturer is expected to be proficient in Finnish. In addition, the university lecturer must have sufficient oral and written skills in Swedish. Foreigners or Finnish nationals who were not born here or have not received their education in Finnish or Swedish may be recused from this language regulation without separate application. The supervision of theses in Finnish requires sufficient knowledge of the language.

The salary is based on the demands chart of the university salary system for teaching and research staff, and amounts to 4,000-5,000 euros per month.
