The position will be affiliated with the discipline of social data science. The discipline has two professors and three university lecturers whose research interests range from modelling of population processes to computational social science and microsimulation to survey methodology. The duties of the university lecturer will include providing teaching in accordance with the degree requirements in applied data science and demography, in particular at the post-graduate level; supervising and examining theses and dissertations; and conducting research in applied data science and demography. The special responsibility of the university lecturer will be to participate in doctoral training and in particular to coordinate local activities of the doctoral training program Population, Health, and Data Science that is starting in 2019 and is run in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research and several other leading centres for data-driven modelling of population processes.


The appointee is required to possess an applicable doctoral degree (for example, in statistics or demography) and have an excellent track record of publishing in international peer-reviewed journals. The appointee should have good knowledge of modern applied statistical methods, including visualization and simulation techniques, and a demonstrated ability to apply, develop, and validate these methods to the analysis of demographic questions in general and to the modelling, estimation, and forecasting of population processes. The applicant must have a track record signalling commitment to open science and open data practices. Interdisciplinary and international experience is highly useful for the position. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good English skills.

• other relevant scholarly activities
• track record of supporting open science practices
• teaching and supervision experience relevant to statistical methods and demography
• teaching demonstration
• interview.


The annual gross annual salary for a university lecturer varies between €44,100–63,000, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. A six-month trial period will be applied.
