Two trainees for Helsinki Hub on Emotions Populism and Polarisation research group

The University of Helsinki International trainee programme is open to all international students enrolled in a University of Helsinki master’s programme.

We are now looking for two TRAINEEs for Helsinki Hub on Emotions Populism and Polarisation research groups’ Horizon Europe projects CO3 and PLEDGE.


The duration of a traineeship is from 1 September to 31 December 2024 (four months) of part-time (50%) work, leaving time for studies as well. The salary of a trainee is €700 per month for a part-time (50%) trainee.

About the position

The trainees will work directly on a team with the Helsinki Hub on Emotions Populism and Polarisation (HEPP) under the leadership of Emilia Palonen, Programme Director in Datafication, or other designated researchers in the affiliated projects. The trainees will be working on the European Parliamentary elections’ multi-modal dataset, assisting the research team in running matters, and updating the teams’ social media accounts. For the trainee, this is a chance to learn how international research teams are operating, and how research is done in a multidisciplinary environment.

The person we are looking for

We are looking for candidates who have research experience and excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and basic IT skills with Microsoft Office environment. The ideal person should be capable of working well independently and as part of a team. It is essential that they can meet deadlines efficiently and are skilled at working in environments that require accommodating diverse opinions, needs, and interests. Demonstrated track-record of taking initiative and pursuing projects (such as thesis work or hobbies).

We are particularly looking for candidates with
•    Coding skills with Python or R
•    Experience with Tableau, Whisper or other pre-analysis tools •    European languages
•    Social media skills
•    Multi-tasking capacity

The preferred candidates may come from Digital Humanities or from the Faculty of Social Sciences masters' programmes, particularly students who are taking or have taken courses on Populism. In-depth knowledge of audiovisual communication and multimodal analysis is appreciated, as the data is drawn from audiovisual social media platforms.
