Deadline: 29 Apr 2024

The University of Helsinki International trainee programme is open to all international students enrolled in a University of Helsinki master’s programme.

We are now looking for a TRAINEE for FIN-CLARIAH project.

The duration of a traineeship is from 1 September to 31 December 2024 (four months) of part-time (50%) work, leaving time for studies as well. The salary of a trainee is €700 per month for a part-time (50%) trainee.

About the position

COSLAB is a tool designed to aid social scientists working with image recognition systems and label images with them. During this internship you will help us to elevate user experience with the development of a robust graphical user interface (GUI). As a trainee with us, you'll dive into exciting tasks such as:

•    Developing a graphical user interface for COSLAB.
•    Conducting potential evaluations of the interface, with the opportunity to expand this into a master's thesis.
•    Ensuring the reliability and smooth operation of COSLAB through rigorous testing and maintenance of its codebase.

As COSLAB has been implemented with Python, you should know this programming language fairly well. There is some previous work on QT/QML UI framework, but there is flexibility on this. In support of open science, all code will be published under MIT license – making this ideal for a student to develop their own profile as well.

This position is located in the Helsinki Social Computing Group , an interdisciplinary research group focused on developing computational and digital methods for social science and examining the impact of algorithms and digital systems to societal live. In addition, the student will belong to the Centre for Social Data Science at the Faculty of Social Science.

The person we are looking for

We seek for a motivated junior person to participate in this development effort, a keen interest in social science research and wish to develop it further is a must. Similarly, we hope expect skills for working independently. We are particularly looking for candidates with

•    Basic level knowledge of Python (including operations of libraries) and interest to develop graphical user interfaces.
•    Willingness to receive feedback through regular code reviews.
•    Good command of English language (no need to master Finnish language)

In your application material, please also explain your experience in Python and software development.
