We are looking for an Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in the field of Medical Technology and Biotechnology. The open position is with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology at Tampere University.
The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) is committed to high quality research and education in the fields of biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine, and health technology. We conduct basic, applied, clinical, and translational research in collaboration with Tampere University Hospital (TAYS).
The position will be placed in one of the three basic science units of the MET faculty, determined by the research profile and interests of the selected applicant.
- In BIO unit, research focuses on immunology, especially in microbial infections and vaccines, as well as on fundamental cellural processes by applying the tools of molecular genetics, biophysics, biochemistry, systems and cell biology.
- In MEDI unit, genome wide methods, computational approaches and experimental models are developed and utilized to understand the mechanisms of diseases, e.g. in celiac disease and cancer.
- In TECH unit, interdisciplinary research areas include cell technologies for various tissue and disease states, e.g. eye, heart and brain, biomaterials, biomedical micro- and nanotechnologies, bioimaging, biophysics, biosensors and body-on-chip technologies.
Job description
We are seeking a highly motivated applicants with a track record of internationally competitive research in medical technology and biotechnology. We welcome applicants with a strong basic science expertise e.g. in molecular and cell technologies, micro-, nano- and biomaterial technologies or computational approaches with possible applications in medical research in the focus areas of the MET faculty .
You are expected to pursue and supervise scientific research in your topic area at the highest level. Active collaboration with local, national and global research partners, as well as with clinical stakeholders and industry is encouraged. You will be expected to secure substantial external funding for your research program as well as nurture interactions with the wider society. You are also expected to contribute to degree education in line with your own expertise.
Requirements
You should have an applicable doctoral degree and postdoctoral training in relevant area for pursuing tenure track career in the fields of medical technology and biotechnology. Teaching experience is regarded favorably.
For the Assistant Professor position, we require:
- ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level of excellence,
- teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position, and
- ambitious research plan.
For the Associate Professor position, we require:
- track record of independent scholarly activity,
- teaching skills to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position,
- ambitious research plan,
- proven ability to lead a research group with international networks,
- and proven success in acquiring significant external funding.
The position requires good communication skills in English. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish, they are expected to acquire moderate proficiency within a reasonable time after the appointment for management of administrative responsibilities. Support for language studies is offered.

We offer an initial appointment for Assistant Professor and Associate Professor for five years. Subject to successful performance evaluation, you will advance in tenure track model and become a permanent member of the faculty staff. You will enjoy a generous startup package, subject to negotiation, and receive support thoughout the five-year period to facilitate the establishment of an internationally competitive research programme. Tampere University provides state-of-the-art research infrastructure and core facilities , including for example bioinformatics, genomics, proteomics, imaging, biomaterial and micro- and nanostructure fabrication and characterization, and animal facilities.
Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System . A typical starting salary for an Assistant Professor is approximately 4800-5100 EUR/month and for an Associate Professor approximately 5500-5900 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be agreed dependent upon experience and/or performance. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.
