Offer Description

Are you interested in unmanned and electric aviation and looking for a new job opportunity in the field? Do you want to have a key role in our team by developing a project portfolio to make a significant impact in changing the world with drone research? Do you want to build an excellent RDI career and work in the exciting interchange of academia and industry? VTT might be just the place for you.

VTT is one of the leading applied research organisations in Europe. What unites us are curiosity, a passion for learning, and a purpose: to solve the biggest challenges of our time and turn them into sustainable growth and well-being. Our cross-disciplinary community of over 2300 brilliant minds focuses on creating impact through science-based innovation. In recent years, we have created ground-breaking innovations such as the world's fastest and most accurate radiation detector, a cancer-sniffing sensor device for smartphones, and a headphone set entirely made of microbial materials. Get to know us further by exploring VTT's tech & infra .

We are now looking for a Senior Scientist to join our unmanned aviation experts within the mobility services team!

We currently have a unique offering and a world-class project portfolio on system level visionary research, development and innovation (RDI) concerning the many facets of the exceptionally fast developing area of unmanned aviation. Our RDI activities include the regulatory development in Europe, unmanned aviation traffic management (UTM) systems, drone technology elements, propulsion systems and the aircrafts themselves – just to name a few. We are focusing on supporting the roll-out of large-scale professional operations with unmanned electric aviation, together with the needed backend systems and services that facilitate such operations. Now we are increasing our capabilities in these activities.

In our Innovative Air Mobility team, you will be working in close collaboration with different stakeholders in jointly funded international projects (such as Horizon Europe, EDF, SESAR JU, Academy of Finland or Business Finland), and national and international customer projects.

With us, as an expert on unmanned aviation, you will:
  • Take a leading role in the planning, preparation, execution, management and coordination of projects.
  • Play a key and supporting role in the planning and acquisition of funding for research activities related to unmanned aviation, not limited to civil applications.
  • Contribute to applied research, development and innovation projects.
  • Participate in customer work and relations.
  • Contribute to the development of our research agenda and offering.
  • Participate in national and international projects and tasks related to future aviation systems and flight operations.
  • Participate in the safety management tasks of VTT Drone operations (e.g. SORA and LUC).

For this position, a keen interest in real-world customer-serving solutions is essential. An advanced understanding of unmanned aviation and its systems is an advantage. The ability to combine theory and practice will help you to work in a solutions-oriented manner. We are particularly looking for a team player with good interaction and communication skills to contribute to our research activities in the field of future aviation.

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for a motivated researcher with several years of professional experience in the field. We expect you to have:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Proven experience in the field of unmanned aviation.
  • A good understanding of the content and status of the European regulatory process and technology maturity for unmanned aviation, and the relevant stakeholders.
  • Preparedness to take leading roles.
  • Interest in developing our research agenda and customer offering.
  • Excellent understanding of international research work in both theoretical and experimental contexts.
  • Proven ability to work on and manage both jointly funded and customer funded projects.
  • Experience of investment funding instruments and projects.
  • Understanding and experience of SORA 2 and 2.5 processes and other operational permits.
  • Good competence in providing written reports and motivation to write applied or scientific publications.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in both Finnish and English.

In addition, you may benefit from the following:

  • Holding EASA UA pilot certifications are an advantage. So are UA flight hours with several device types, both at work and external to work (even if we here are not seeking staff for UA piloting per se)
  • Experience from another relevant field (e.g. conventional aviation, ATM systems, airspace structures).
  • Basic knowledge on telecom, sensors, autonomous systems, robotic systems, remote control systems, AI, VR, AR, XR, and 3D models.
  • Understanding of CUAS systems.
  • Knowledge of potential use cases for UA in various domains and validating those in test areas or other experimental settings.

As a person, we hope that you are:

You have excellent interaction, presentation and communication skills and you enjoy using them in both internal and external relations. You have the willingness and ability to participate in a wide array of international research activities, including project sales. You are able to self-organize and you have a proven ability to think and act proactively.
