Senior Scientist, Materials Design and Processing at VTT Powder Piloting

Updated: over 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 16 Jan 2022

Are you interested in sustainable materials design and manufacturing, and looking for a new job opportunity in the field? Do you dream of integrating modern experimental research and the world-class computational materials modelling in your work? VTT might be just the place for you. As an expert of metallic and ceramic materials, you might be our future colleague!

VTT is one of the leading applied research organisations in Europe. What unites us are curiosity, a passion for learning and a purpose: to solve the biggest challenges of our time and turn them into sustainable growth and well-being. Our cross-disciplinary community of over 2000 brilliant minds is focused on creating impact through science-based innovation.

In recent years, we have for example demonstrated how industrial side-streams can be utilized as raw materials, how critical raw materials Co and W can be substituted in hard metals, how novel magnetic materials can be used in electromechanical components based on additive manufacturing and many more successful examples targeting higher material efficiency and lower energy consumption. We are now looking for a Senior Scientist to join our Sustainable Materials Design team.

As a Senior Scientist, your key goals are developing the team’s knowledge and project portfolio towards strategic targets and further ensure that our capabilities and results are in line with the demands of our customers. In this position, you will have an essential role in combining experimental and computational modelling tools to speed up the development cycle of novel metal, ceramic and composite materials and their manufacturing technologies. You will participate in a wide range of projects as an expert on your field and have an important role in project planning together with our customers.

Our team, Sustainable Materials Design, focuses on the development of material and manufacturing solutions enabling resource savings and higher operation performance for the entire life-cycle. We are specialized in powder-based materials and processing technologies. VTT Powder Piloting facilities covers whole chain form material processing to manufacturing of components ready to testing in real operation conditions. The following three themes form the backbone of our projects:

  • Resource sufficiency via substitution, secondary raw materials and long life-cycle.
  • Energy efficiency via minimizing wear, friction, power losses during operation and manufacturing.
  • Material and manufacturing solutions to support emerging technologies, such as electrification (e-mobility, e-processes) and additive manufacturing.
