Do you want to join our 6G research team at VTT? Our team focuses on development of satellite and terrestrial communications solutions for demanding application areas such as autonomous and remote-controlled systems, and industrial users. We develop also situational awareness solutions to enable autonomous operations, and to optimize use of spectrum for future communication systems. The team is located in Oulu and Espoo, the location for this position is Espoo.

We are looking for a (Senior) Research Scientist to do research on intelligent radio access networks (RAN) in beyond-5G/6G. The work will include wide range of duties over system aspects of RAN, for example participation on Proof-of-concept development, Cloud-RAN architectural design, intelligent algorithms and software development for next generation radio resource management, control apps development of RAN intelligence controller, solutions for cloud and network function orchestration, management and monitoring, among other future research topics on new beyond-5G/6G technologies.  

We are providing interesting and challenging work in a dynamic research team. This opens excellent possibilities for the applicant to participate both in national and international R&D projects. The position also opens possibilities in participation to new VTT’s PhD Program. As a (Senior) Research Scientist you would be responsible later for preparations of new projects and project management.  

The work may include following parts: 

• Conduct research on new technologies and trends in 5G/6G networks related to cloud-RAN, AI/ML, edge computing, etc. 
• Software development in cloud environments for proof-of-concept development 
• Developing AI enhanced RRM, system orchestration and automation functions in O-Cloud environments (xApp, rApp) 
• Provision and manage cloud resources, such as virtual machines, containers, databases, and load balancers, using tools such as Terraform or Kubernetes  
• Analyze and interpret data collected from the cloud-native environment and the telecommunications systems, using statistical and mathematical models and software such as MATLAB. 
• Write and publish research papers or reports on the findings and outcomes.  

In order to succeed you should have:    

• M.Sc. or D.Sc./Ph.D. degree in telecommunications, computer science or engineering. 
• Experience in working with wireless network technologies, including, for example, 5G, LTE, 6G. 
• Practical technical and research skills, and the ability to design and develop cloud-based applications and services for the telecommunications sector. 
• Problem-solving and analytical skills, and the ability to apply established or new research methods to solve complex problems. 
• Basic understanding of 4G/5G L1/L2/L3 protocols and functionalities. 
• Experience on 4G/5G protocol testing  
• Highly developed IT skills and proficiency in programming languages such as Python, or C++  
• Motivation for a research career. 
• Mandatory spoken and written fluency in English.
