The Department of Geosciences and Geography is the leading research and education unit in its field in Finland. In addition to research in geology, geophysics and geography, research into seismology and official duties in the field of seismology is carried out at the department.
Institute of Seismology belongs to the Department of the Geosciences and Geography. The Institute performs research, education, continuous Earth monitoring, and helps government and private organisations in their projects requiring seismological expertise. The institute is responsible for seismic monitoring in Finland and for providing seismic waveform and earthquake data products to international seismological datacentres.
Faculty of Science invites application for a permanent position as a
SEISMOLOGIST
starting from March 2023 or as agreed.
The focus of the position is to lead the seismological observatory practice of the Finnish National Seismic Network and to conduct research in earthquake seismology. The candidate is expected to oversee the modernization of the institute’s seismological analysis and to develop and maintain a scalable analysis workflow on the Unix/Linux computing platform in collaboration with the Institute´s technical team.
Requirements and eligibility criteria
We seek a motivated team member, who has a PhD degree in seismology or a related field, with demonstrated experience in seismological observatory practice. Skills in coding, project management and science communication are merits. The appointee must have fluent English skills and proficiency in Finnish. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish, he/she is expected to acquire advanced level skills (CEFR level B2; https://www.eur.nl/en/education/language-training-centre/cefr-levels ) within five years after the appointment. The university will support the appointee in acquiring the necessary Finnish language skills.

The starting salary of the position will be 4000-5000 euros/month. Permanent positions at the University of Helsinki always start with a six-month trial period.
