Researchers in inverse problems

Updated: over 1 year ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 02 Oct 2022

The uncertainty quantification and inverse problems research group at the LUT School of Engineering Science is looking for two researchers in the field of inverse problems.

The research group focuses on applied statistics and inverse problems. We specialise in the field of Bayesian statistical inverse problems, addressing real-world inverse problems as Bayesian statistical estimation problems. We study how statistical errors in measured data propagate to solutions within the complex mathematical models of inverse problems. Our group at the School of Engineering Science is part of the Centre of Excellence of Inverse Modelling and Imaging (2018–2025) selected by the Academy of Finland.

The researcher positions focus on research at the interface of inverse problems and statistics and are located at the Department of Computational Engineering. The positions are funded by the Academy of Finland consortium research project “New frontiers in Bayesian optimal design for applied inverse problems” and the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence of Inverse Modelling and Imaging.

You should have a PhD or DSc (Eng.) degree in a relevant field (e.g. mathematics or statistics). A strong background in applied mathematics or statistics and good communications skills in English are required. Also, experience in probabilistic machine learning techniques is considered an advantage.

The work will start at the earliest in November 2022 (negotiable) with a six-month trial period. The salary is based on the current collective agreement for Finnish universities. The annual salary range of post-doctoral researchers is approximately 46 700–54 500 euros (plus a holiday bonus) depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.

The deadline for applications is 2 October 2022 at midnight, Finnish local time (UTC +2 h). Please apply by filling out the online application form and attaching the following documents:

  • Your CV
  • An account of your merits and activities of significance to the vacancy (max. 2 pages)
  • A copy of your doctoral degree certificate and transcript of records. If the original documents are not in English, Finnish or Swedish, each document must be accompanied by an official certified translation into English or Finnish.
