Research Scientist, Precision Electrical Measurements

Updated: over 1 year ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 21 Aug 2022

Are you interested in Precision Electrical Measurements and looking for a new job opportunity in the field? Would you like to develop innovative technology with superb colleagues who are top experts in their field? Do you want to build an excellent science career and work at the interface of the academy and industry? Are you enthusiastic about working with fascinating projects in state-of-the-art research facilities? VTT might be just the place for you.

VTT is one of the leading applied research organisations in Europe. What unites us are curiosity, a passion for learning, and a purpose: to solve the biggest challenges of our time and turn them into sustainable growth and well-being. Our cross-disciplinary community of over 2000 brilliant minds focuses on creating impact through science-based innovation. In recent years, we have created ground-breaking innovations such as the world's fastest and most accurate radiation detector, a cancer-sniffing sensor device for smartphones, and a headphone set entirely made of microbial materials. We are looking for an ambitious and results-oriented researcher with a background in electrical measurement techniques. VTT MIKES realizes the SI system of units in Finland, and Electrical Metrology Team is responsible for the national reference standards of electrical quantities. In this team, you will have a key role in high-accuracy electrical measurements, especially in customer applications but also in developing and maintaining national measurement standards for electrical quantities. You identify and solve problems independently and creatively, while working closely and flexibly with a team of experts.

In this position, you have an opportunity to participate in development of high precision electrical measurement systems and using such systems for the benefit of our customers. You will work in close contact with Finnish and international industry.

As a Research Scientist, you will:

Be performing applied metrology research, with an emphasis on electrical precision measurements and calibrations needed by industrial customers

Participate in research projects developing new and improved measurement methods

Work in close collaboration with experts at VTT MIKES and with our clients and research partners in Finland and abroad. You may focus either on low voltage measurements below 1000 V or on high voltage measurements up to several hundred kilovolts, or both.

Who we are looking for:

Someone with experience in precision electrical measurement techniques, and a master’s level degree in physics, electrical engineering, or another field connected closely to electrical metrology. We are mainly interested in junior professionals, possibly with interest in postgraduate studies.

Someone who has practical working experience of at least one of the following areas:

 Low voltage (< 1000 V) measurement techniques

High voltage (> 1000 V) measurements techniques or

 Programming

Experience in performing experiments, development of measurement systems and uncertainty analysis are highly valued. Hands-on experience in high voltage work would be highly useful. Electronics design and assembly skills are also appreciated. Practical programming skills are certainly necessary to support efficient design work and analysis of results. An Electrical Safety Card is an advantage but is not a requirement. You should have good proficiency in Finnish and English skills.

As a person, we hope that you are:

A person, that strives for excellent results but also prioritize and make pragmatic choices. You are focused and systematic. You contribute to a positive team spirit and prioritize the needs of the team high. You are hardworking but you also communicate, collaborate, and delegate effectively. You find it inspiring to work with a team of experts. You are eager to work with new topics with open-minded and curious attitude. You can bring clarity over complexity and identify the essential bottle necks.

With VTT, you’ll enjoy:
