Research Scientist (Postdoc, in the electrochemical recovery of phosphorous from water)
Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) is seeking a Research Scientist to the process laboratory team. The position is within the Circular Economy Solutions unit, and your office will be in Kuopio, Finland.
In this position, you work in different projects and project calls depending on the current work demand. In the beginning you will be part of a research project that aims to develop an innovative approach for separating and recovering phosphorus from contaminated waters in a sustainable and economically viable manner.
Tasks associated with this position are as follows:
- Conducting experimental laboratory studies on the performance of electrocoagulation (EC) in separating phosphorus from water.
- Analysis of the interactions between the various operational EC parameters and optimising the process employing statistical methodologies (for instance, DOE).
- Laboratory testing of the hybrid EC-based system.
- Conducting analytical measurements, collecting research data and interpreting data.
- Producing high-quality scientific outputs
- Progress reporting to the project principal investigator and your supervisor.
- Traveling in Finland and abroad
Education, experience and skills expected of an applicant
- A doctoral degree in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, or a similar discipline.
- Proven research experience (doctoral thesis, projects, or publications) in topics related to electrochemical processes for the treatment of water and wastewater.
- Hands-on experience in electrochemical laboratory workstations, common analytical measurements, and surface characterisation methods.
- Ability to plan and execute tasks effectively through laboratory experimental work and employment of statistical tools to produce quality research outputs.
- Ability to work independently in the laboratory and with team members with different backgrounds.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
Education, experience and skills that are appreciated
- Familiarity with life cycle assessment
- Driving licence (category B)
- Interest in studying Finnish

Information about pay
The total salary at the beginning of employment will be EUR 3770 – 4017 per month. The salary is determined by the competence of the person selected for the position.

Other details
This is a fixed-term position for 1 year, with the possibility of extension if the resource situation of the research project so allows. The starting date is 1.6.2024 or by agreement. The position includes a probationary period.
