We are now looking for Research Scientist to join our Sustainable Materials Design team.

As a Research Scientist, your key goals are developing of novel metal and ceramic materials and their manufacturing technologies to solve challenges of selected industrial applications.  In this position, you will have in essential role in development of our research infrastructure to speed up development cycle and that way ensure our competitiveness. You will participate to planning and performing of wide range of projects. As an expert on your field, you will help your colleagues to develop and construct new processing and characterization routines enabling us to better answer current and future customer demands.

Our team, Sustainable Materials Design, is focusing on development of material and manufacturing solutions enabling resource savings and higher operation performance for entire life-cycle. We have specialized on powder-based materials and manufacturing technologies. VTT Powder Piloting facilities covers whole chain form material processing to manufacturing of components ready to testing in real operation conditions. The three themes are forming backbone of our projects:

  • Resource sufficiency via substitution, secondary raw materials and long-life cycle
  • Energy efficiency via minimizing wear, friction, power losses during operation and manufacturing
  • Material and manufacturing solutions to support rising technologies as electrification (e-mobility, e-processes) and additive manufacturing

Your responsibilities as a Research Scientist:
  • You daily based work consists of performing material processing, characterization and testing related tasks in our Powder Piloting research facilities. As a part of this job, you will maintain and develop our processing and characterization capabilities to ensure high quality and continuous evolution of our research facilities and techniques.
  • You will be responsible for analysing the test results and further reporting them in a desired way. As a project group member, you are ensuring that defined tasks are performed on time and the needed information is shared with team.
  • You will continuously develop your skills towards to maximizing support to team strategic goals and customer demands.

Who we are looking for:
  • You have deep understanding about materials engineering and processing technologies in the field of metals and ceramics.
  • You have a MSc degree in the field of materials engineering or physics and preferentially some studies related to electric/automation and/or machine design. We expect you to have working history in the area of materials engineering and proven experience of working in laboratory/industrial environment solving materials and manufacturing related problems in practice.
  • You have knowledge and background in at least some of the following topics:
    • Metals and ceramic processing technologies, like casting, sintering, additive manufacturing.
    • Analysing and characterization methods and tools, like SEM, EDS, XRD, DSC.
    • Experience on processing and characterization equipment’s, including measurement and data collection technologies, data analysing knowledge is considered as advantage.
    • Practical design skills connected to the use of a 3D design software’s, like SolidWorks.
  • Fluent written and spoken English and at least basic Finnish skills are mandatory.
