Offer Description

A PhD researcher position in the VIROVEC project “Towards practical virocontrol against Heterobasidion spp. using a new vector”.

Luke invites applications for a researcher position in a multidisciplinary Forest Health and Biodiversity -group. The researcher will mostly work in the VIROVEC project funded by the Natural Resources Research Foundation (https://www.slts.fi/en/funded-projects-2/ ; “Towards practical virocontrol against Heterobasidion spp. using a new vector”). Funding for the project is provided in the form of one-year research grants with an opportunity for a three-year total duration. The researcher's task is to investigate the possibilities of using a new vector for transmitting a fungal virus found suitable for the biological control of Heterobasidion spp. root rot fungi. The research will be conducted in accordance with the approved research plan and will include both laboratory and greenhouse or field experiments. The researcher's tasks will include the implementation of experiments as well as scientific reporting and research communication and networking. The research carried out during the project can be used in a Doctoral thesis supervised by the project Principal Investigator and the results will also be published as scientific peer-reviewed publications, of which the hired researcher has the main writing responsibility.

Our expectations of the applicant

Required qualifications include a Master’s degree or an equivalent academic level of competence and expertise in molecular biology, microbiology and laboratory techniques. Knowledge on forest pathology, mycology and virology is considered an advantage. The applicant should be capable of both independent work and teamwork as part of a multidisciplinary research group. We also require the applicant to have good oral and written communication skills and English language skills, and success in previous studies.
