Research Professor in Sustainable Fisheries

The main field of research for this research professor position is the sustainability of commercial and recreational fisheries and fish stocks, including ecological, economic, and social sustainability. The research professor’s key competences include broad expertise in the field, strong networking capabilities, attraction of national and international research funding, and successful guidance and encouragement of Luke's field-related research teams. Also new initiatives in improving the vitality of fisheries as a part of the food system are welcome.

This research professor position is located in Luke's Natural Resources unit, in the Fisheries and Fish Resources group (KALA), whose key competence and responsibility areas are the following: 1. Monitoring of the commercially significant fish species, stock assessments and scientific advice on fishing opportunities, as well as related expert tasks; 2. Research related to fisheries management and sustainable use of fish resources as well as fish habitats on coastal and inland waters; 3.Development work towards the improvement of the profitability of fishing and securing its continuity together with stakeholders; and 4. Biodiversity research, including monitoring and evaluations of threatened and alien fish species.

Key tasks of the KALA group are included in Luke's permanent Statutory and Expert Services programme, but a significant part of the operations is linked to Luke's five-year strategic research programmes, particularly the Profitable and Responsible Primary Production, and Adaptive and Resilient Bioeconomy programmes.

The research professor position will be based in Luke's office in Turku, Helsinki, Jyväskylä or Oulu.
