The field of research is on remote sensing methods for forestry applications. Luke conducts national forest inventory where remote sensing data plays an important role. The greenhouse gas reporting on the LULUCF (Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry) sector is an important Luke activity, where the role of remote sensing could be enhanced. We also expect wider research on the application of remote sensing for sustainable forestry, e.g. change detection for updating forest data, tree modeling using terrestrial laser scanning and acquisition of detailed forest data using airborne laser scanning.

The research professor is expected to actively develop the strategic orientation of ambitious research projects, lead the development of large-scale international project entities, develop and scientifically lead a strong research group in the field of research at Luke, and secure long-term broad-based funding.

The research professor should have a doctoral degree in relevant field. We appreciate a proven track record showing application of remote sensing for forest inventory, including satellite (e.g. Sentinel, Landsat) and aerial images, and airborne laser and hyperspectral scanning data. Experience on the applications of terrestrial laser scanning or other portable sensor data is an asset.

The task requires internationally valued and recognized know-how, experience of managing the entire process of broad research or development entities from needs assessment to application of research results, and capacity to build a strong international research project portfolio, actively collaborate with academic and industrial players and stimulate active use of research results by beneficiaries. The research professor is also expected to having established international networks and to be actively engaged in national and international collaborations. The research professor should have track record in leading and managing international research projects, building attractive research environments, acquiring external funding and publishing and disseminating scientific results.
