Work tasks

The research professorship in soil science should provide the high-quality scientific basis for sustainable management of agricultural soils:
- Developing soil management and investigating essential soil processes to promote sustainable and profitable plant production in the face of changing climate
- Assessing and controlling cycles of organic and inorganic compounds in cultivated soils, incl. development of new types of fertilizers and soil amendments, for precise plant nutrition and improved soil structure
- Studying soil-plant-atmosphere interactions to improve the capacity of soil to sequester carbon and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions
- Characterization of Soil Organic Matter (SOM) and its stabilization in agricultural soil
- Improving soil ecosystem functions under various cropping systems
- Collaborating and networking with biological, bio-chemical, hydro-geochemical as well as forest and peat soil related research at Luke
The person nominated in the position is expected to actively develop the strategic orientation of ambitious research projects, lead the development of large-scale project entities and the procurement of long-term EU-funding.

The position requires excellent problem-solving, communication and international academic leadership skills, capacity to apply for external funding, capacity to lead laboratory and field work, and capacity to cooperate with clients including ministry staff, industry, other agencies, NGOs and farmers.

The research professor (tenure track: associate or full professor) should have a doctoral degree in soil or agricultural science with special emphasis on soil chemistry, plant nutrition, soil structure or equivalent. High-quality scientific publication record is essential. Strong methodological skills on laboratory methods both in chemistry and physics are essential, while dynamic modeling, molecular biology, stable isotopes, (bio)-markers, soil tomography and other are seen as advantages.

We expect that the candidate develops a research plan with an aim to enhance Luke's expertise in this field and to increase Luke's impact. The research professor is expected to build a strong research project portfolio, actively collaborate with academic and industrial players and stimulate active use of research results by beneficiaries. The research professor is also expected to have established international networks and to be actively engaged in national and international collaborations. The research professor should have strong track record in managing and leading international research projects, building attractive research environments, acquiring external funding and in publishing and disseminating scientific results.

 The position is at complexity level 12 - 13 in Luke's salary system. Therefore, the position-specific salary component is EUR 5 002,26 - 5 650,29 per month. In addition to the position-specific salary component, a salary component based on personal performance will be paid. It can be at most 50% of the position-specific salary component.
