The Faculty of Science and Engineering develops solutions and processes to slow down climate change, promotes a cleaner environment and a healthier sea and finds methods to discover, treat and prevent diseases. The Faculty of Science and Engineering offers one position as research assistant or doctoral researcher (with an opportunity to pursue doctoral degree studies) for 24 months within the project ‘Virtual Sea Trial’ funded by Business Finland. The position is placed at the Laboratory of Industrial Management and starts on 1.6.2024, or according to agreement. 

Background 

The Laboratory of Industrial Management is involved in many externally funded projects. In the Virtual Sea Trial-project, the aim is to develop processes digitally enhanced commissioning processes in shipbuilding and business models for virtual testing technologies. The project offers an opportunity to pursue doctoral studies based on the research done in it. Other projects in the same thematic area are under development.

Description of the position

The main task of this position is to assist in the development of new business processes and project management models for digitally enhanced commissioning activities. This includes the collection, analysis, and management of data, mapping processes, and developing and configuring simulation models, as well as writing reports and scientific articles.

The virtual testing technologies also holds the potential to change current business models in the shipbuilding industry. At a further stage, another task of the position is, therefore, to participate in the development of data-driven business models implying collecting, processing, and analyzing data to provide insights and make informed decisions. 

Data-driven business models are built on such technologies as Internet of Things, Big Data analytics, Advance Analytics, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Technically, implementation of such a business model requires access, connectivity, transformation and storage for large amount of often unstructured data. 

We are looking for a person with a cross-disciplinary background, feeling comfortable with named technologies, but strongly oriented toward business development and fluent in industrial management field.

The position is located in Turku, Finland. 

Qualification and assessment

We are looking for a motivated person who has an interest in research work and an educational background in Industrial Management, Industrial Engineering, Information Systems, or Software Engineering, or other closely related fields suitable for the position described above. 

The main qualifications requirements for the positions are:

  • Master's degree in industrial management, industrial engineering, information systems, software engineering or other related fields 
  • Excellent oral and written skills in English
  • Good knowledge and research experience in business models, data-driven service, industrial management.
  • Knowledge of simulations and business process engineering is an additional asset

Appreciated (but not mandatory) technical skills include SQL, Excel/Spreadsheets, Statistics and ML Basics, Programming (Python/R), Database Management, Data Warehousing, Visualization (at least some of those).

Desired soft skills are critical thinking, communication, time management, collaboration, ethics and privacy, problem solving.

The applicants are assessed based on the qualifications above and possible results of research in the relevant field or related subjects, as well as their description of research experiences or research plan (applicants interested in the PhD-position need to submit a research plan). During the selection process, the applicants can be invited to an interview.

Applicants who wish to conduct doctoral studies but are not yet accepted as a doctoral student at the faculty need to fulfil the requirements for applicants to doctoral studies according to the principles for admission to the doctoral programs at the faculty. Please note, that there is a separate application process for the admission to a doctoral programme at ÅAU. Applicants do not have to begin the separate application process for the admission to a doctoral program at ÅAU before being appointed.

Terms of employment

The principle of total working time (1,612 hours per year) applies to employment as research assistant or doctoral researcher. The work tasks are defined in an annual work plan.

The salary is determined in accordance with the general collective agreement for universities, and will be based on levels 2-4 of the job demand level for teaching and researching staff.

A trial period applies for new employees.
