Research assistant

to join us in Water, Energy and Environmental Engineering Research Unit,  Faculty of Technology.


About the job

The selected applicant will be working in the Academy of Finland funded HYDRA project. HYDRA is studying the sustainability of energy transition integrating nuclear energy for power and heat, as well as hydrogen routes. We will evaluate 4 hypothetical routes to sustainable energy systems; a high-renewable share Optimistic (1), ecologically motivated Radical (2), nuclear-based Realistic (3), and a Wild card (4) scenario integrating small modular reactor (SMRs).

The expectation is that the research assistant would complete their diploma work in the project in 6 months, the additional 2 months are reserved to writing a scientific article from the results.

For the theory part of the master’s thesis, the task is to conduct a review of the current plans for European 2050 decarbonization and beyond and role of nuclear and hydrogen in it. This includes European plans for hydrogen expansion, bold plans for nuclear renewal based on current research trends, such SMRs, electrification scenarios as well as and outlook of heat storage innovations.

For the experimental part, the candidate is to outline potential pathways for nuclear energy technology share and expansion, that will work as input data to the scenario planning.

Who are you?

When filling the position, preference will be given to Master’s students at the University of Oulu, however candidates from outside Oulu are also welcome to apply. We are looking primarily for candidates interested in continuing for doctoral studies for the degree of Doctor of Technology.

Successful candidates would have a strong background in energy science and/or technology, interested in the future of nuclear power and in particular SMRs as well as hydrogen. Experience or interest in system modelling is an advantage.

In order to succeed and enjoy the position, we expect from you: 

  • Minimum a bachelor’s degree in technology or natural sciences
  • Fluency in writing and communicating in English
  • Ability for in-office work at the University of Oulu

  • Master's thesis (or research report)
  • Scientific article for a peer-review journal

Salary

The position is fixed-term for 8 months as of 1.3.2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The salary will depend on the candidate's background and academic level and is based on the level OV01 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. For students without a master's degree, a 25% reduction is applied from the research level salary. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid. Starting gross salary will be approx. 1700 - 2000 € per month (before taxes).  A trial period of 4 months is applied in the position.
