Would you like to work as a Diversity Council team member for Una Europa?

The Una Europa  alliance comprises 11 prestigious universities. The University of Helsinki has been a member since 2019. Una Europa promotes opportunities for students and faculty level researchers to study and conduct research at the universities in the network. Diversity is one of the main values of Una Europa.

The Diversity Council consists of Una Europa partner universities’ respective units responsible for issues of equality and diversity. The goal of the Diversity Council is to promote equality, equity, and social justice, including all identifiable disadvantaged groups. Our hope is to reach the various sectors of the academic community, including students, professors, researchers, and administrators, among others. The Diversity Council provides the vision and mission for diversity and inclusion and develops subsequent guidelines for action for Una Europa. In this iteration of the Diversity Council, the second one, our special interest is in students with migrant and refugee backgrounds. We are now searching for an enthusiastic mission-oriented scholar to join Una Europa’s Diversity Council and the Una Europa team of the University of Helsinki. The appointment is on a fixed term basis, starting from 1.5.2023  until 31.12.2024 (possibility for an additional two years) and the role is part-time (50 percent). We are mindful of ensuring that the hours of service are commensurate with the half-time payment plan. The Council, together with Una Europa and the University of Helsinki, is committed to promoting equality, equity and inclusion in our activities and diversity among the university community. We welcome applicants of diverse backgrounds, especially people from underrepresented language and cultural groups as well as applicants with migrant or refugee history. We believe in the principle of positive special treatment to support the mission of the Council during the recruitment process.

The work with the Council, as well as with other Una Europa teams, provides a unique opportunity to network both within the university and at the European level.

THE MAIN TASKS WILL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

• As a member of the Council and the University of Helsinki Una Europa team, develop visions and actions around diversity and inclusion;

• Attend monthly online meetings with the Diversity Council and an annual meeting of all members of the Diversity Council at one of the Una Europa universities;

• Acting as liaison between the Diversity Council and the Una Europa Student Board, as well as with the local student associations;

• Planning and conducting grassroot-level initiatives in collaboration with the students, with the Council, and with the Una Europa Helsinki team, and

• Collaboratively developing ways to better include underrepresented and migrant and refugee groups in the Finnish-European Academia as students and as academic and administrative staff members. 

The working language of the Council and Una Europa collaboration is English. We appreciate also other language skills such as languages of the universities of the Una Europa Collaboration, and especially languages of underrepresented, migrant and refugee communities in Finland and in European countries.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Affiliation with the University of Helsinki;

• Actively engaged doctoral student with research focus on the topics of diversity, equality, equity, or inclusion;

• Excellent communication skills in both writing and public speaking, especially in English;

• Demonstrative vision, skill in development of diverse networks, collaborative orientation, the ability to work for equity and inclusion of underrepresented student groups;

• Preferably from migrant or refugee background, with understanding of the structural issues of underrepresentation concerning minorities and migrants and refugees in academia, and,

• A realistic commitment to the Council’s work at least until end of 2024. Possibility to continue for two more years.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary is based on level 8 in the requirement scheme for specialist and support staff positions in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee is paid a salary component based on personal performance. The gross monthly salary will be approximately 1 450 € - 1 650 € (50 % allocation) depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. A 6-month probation period will be in effect.
