The Faculty educates experts to meet the needs of universities, research institutes, government, schools and the business sector. The Faculty is comprised of three units or research programmes: Ecosystems and Environment, Organismal and Evolutionary Biology, and Molecular and Integrative Biosciences. https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-biological-and-environmental-sciences

Faculty of Biological and Environmental invites applications for the position of

ASSISTANT / ASSOCIATE / FULLPROFESSOR IN ECOLOGICALDATASCIENCES

The selected applicant will be appointed to a fixed-term assistant / associate professorship (tenure track) / full professorship depending on their qualifications and career stage. The tenure track position is expected to lead to full professorship after evaluation.

We seek an internationally competitive researcher with a strong academic track-record in ecological data sciences to strengthen and expand research in the highly international research environment of the Organismal and Evolutionary Biology research programme (OEB), within the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences. The selected candidate should have expertise in developing new methods for acquiring ecological data and/or interpreting that data and/or working with large ecological datasets and their analysis. We are particularly interested in candidates aiming to develop new approaches to understand ecological and/or evolutionary processes and interaction networks between genomes, populations, communities and environments.

The appointee is expected to engage extensively in collaboration with other staff members to resolve, across biological levels, the mechanisms causing and regulating why some species show resilience to environmental change. The selected candidate will join existing research groups in OEB with expertise in ecological statistics and bioinformatics, ecological and evolutionary genomics, evolutionary theory, evolutionary ecology, behavioural ecology and plant sciences, and

who work with a wide range of animal, plant or fungal study systems in natural, semi-natural and laboratory settings. Faculty researchers have extensive long term ecological datasets collected also at the Faculty’s three biological stations, and their analysis offers excellent possibilities for collaboration for the new recruit. (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-biological-and-environmental-sciences/research/biological-research-stations ). The selected candidate is also expected to participate in (and be responsible for some courses) and develop undergraduate and graduate teaching and supervision in ecology/evolutionary biology and, for instance, quantitative methods and modelling in ecology and evolution and statistics.

The Viikki Campus offers offers many excellent facilities for research. A BioData Analytics Unit based at Helsinki Institute of Life Sciences, HiLIFE (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/helsinki-institute-of-life-science ) has been established recently with four staff scientists and IT infrastructure to assist the PIs in dealing with current big data challenges and to provide off-the-shelf solutions for data analysis. The BioData Analytics Unit also assists with the development of analysis methods as required by synergistic research projects, which can be integrated with our other data analysis efforts, such as HiDATA (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/helsinki-centre-for-data-science ). In addition to laboratories for molecular and experimental work the Campus has a Laboratory Animal Centre and other animal rearing facilities, extensive research greenhouses, common garden and plant phenotyping facilities, as well as an umbrella organisation Viikki Plant Science Centre ViPS (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/viikki-plant-science-centre ). The campus faculties also have superb research stations located around the country and one in Kenya (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/research-stations ).
