Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering focuses on sustainable utilization of raw materials, designing and developing more efficient processes for new materials and products. We as chemical engineers contribute to the future society with sustainable processes enabling circular economy and bioeconomy.

The department is in a key position in research related to chemical engineering, materials technology, metals processing, efficient energy technologies and digitalization of these. Our core competences include unit operations and processes, hydro- and pyro-metallurgy, catalytic processes and materials, polymer engineering, process control and process systems engineering.

We invite applications for the position of

PROFESSOR IN CIRCULAR AND SUSTAINABLE CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

The position can be filled at any level of the Aalto tenure track system (assistant, associate or full professor).

The position and our expectations   

We are looking for an ambitious professional for ground-breaking academic work in the field of Circular and Sustainable Chemical Engineering. We expect you to have strong expertise in Chemical Engineering unit operations and processes for Sustainable and Circular production processes in the fields relevant to the department.

The position will be in core to influence the development of sustainability and circularity, thus we appreciate the professor to:

  • Understand transition towards sustainable and fair global industry and its technical and societal basis, including economic and social perspectives. Understand the relevant engineering field between laws of nature and man-made laws from engineering and system-level perspective, including concepts such as carbon neutrality, resource efficiency, and process and plant integrations.
  • Participate in teaching of engineering and plant design basics both on BSc and MSc levels. Important topics for our curriculum are e.g. process and plant design, recycling technologies and related analysis, process safety and sustainability, feasibility, LCA and EHS.
  • Initiate research projects on circular economy, such as: new raw materials, materials development, recycling, analysis and design of novel processes, carbon capture and storage as well as life cycle and sustainability assessment.
  • Lead a research group, educate doctoral students and produce high-quality research that can be published in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Disseminate research results and contribute to the progress of the school and department, its international visibility and interaction with the society.
  • Be willing and able to collaborate with the different industrial sectors and colleagues both at Aalto University and across the global community. Existing networks are seen positive when reviewing the applicants.

A doctoral degree in chemical engineering or in a related field is a prerequisite for the position. The applicants will be reviewed based on their excellence and future potential in scientific research and teaching, and their active role within the international science community and industry.
