Offer Description

We are seeking a Principal Scientist to strengthen soil research in Luke. We expect you to develop and lead Luke’s research on carbon and nutrient cycling processes in forest soils on mineral soil sites, and how these processes are controlled.

Your research will be focused on soil carbon and nutrient cycling processes, nutrient availability, and organic matter quality. Of nutrients nitrogen should preferably have special emphasis. The objective is to better understand the linkages between these factors, and their significance both for the biomass production of forest ecosystems and for the environmental and climate impacts. The main focus should be on the response of soil processes and properties to forest management in changing environment and climate, but you are expected to react also to actual research topics in a broader sense.

Your tasks include planning and leading research projects and working in those, as well as developing both field and laboratory methods connected to the research topics. We expect you to publish at international scientific level, acquire research funding and be active in both national and international collaboration networks.

The position of Principal Scientist is permanent.

Our expectations of the applicant

Successful performance of the task requires comprehensive knowledge on soil processes and how they are controlled. Understanding how carbon and nutrient cycling processes and nutrient availability are linked to organic matter quality will be considered advantageous for the position, as well as know-how on field and laboratory methods and the capability to develop them.

We expect you to have:
• A doctoral degree on soil science, forest or environmental sciences or on another relevant field
• An excellent scientific publication record and experience in thesis supervising, getting research funding and leading research projects
• Fluency in spoken and written English

As a worker in Luke we expect from you:
• Excellent capabilities to lead your own work and an open-minded attitude for learning new things
• Excellent team work skills; you like to inspire and encourage other people and help them to succeed
• Excellent networking skills.

Benefits

Our mobile work model allows you to work in Finland in the location most appropriate for your work. In addition, we provide flexible hours, and as your employment with us continues, long vacations. We offer lunch benefits, as well as sports, culture or commuting support.

For international recruits, we provide a relocation package, which includes concrete support for coming to Finland and Luke (eg. residence permit, various registration procedures, banking and taxation, finding an apartment).

Clarifications

The person selected for the position might need to undergo standard security clearance vetting with the applicant’s consent (Security Clearance Act 726/2014). More detailed information on the procedure and the subject's rights is available at www.supo.fi .
