This is why we warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds to join our community.

The Department of Information and Communications Engineering is looking for outstanding

Postdoctoral Researchers in the area of Personalized Online Machine Learning for Wireless Networks

Are you an ambitious and talented researcher seeking to push the boundaries of machine learning and wireless communications? Do you want to be part of an innovative team working on cutting-edge projects that have real-world impact? If so, we invite you to apply for our prestigious three-year postdoctoral position at the Department of Information and Communications Engineering (DICE), Aalto University, Helsinki, Finland. The position is tied to the project PLEDGE: Personalized Online Learning on the Edge in IoT/CPS, funded by the Research Council of Finland (2023-2027).

The PLEDGE project aims to break new ground in the realm of reliable learning for resource-constrained networks with irregular and unstructured streaming data. In particular, we are focused on developing theories and algorithms for decentralized personalized learning in multi-agent wireless networks, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and cyber-physical systems (CPS). These networks play a vital role in the digital transformation of industries and societies but face challenges due to varying system dynamics, energy constraints, latency requirements, and data privacy concerns. Our research will pioneer trustworthy graph-based personalized online (federated) learning solutions, safeguarding data privacy and overall performance. We will take a privacy/secure-by-design approach to address adversaries attempting to disrupt learning or extract private information, going beyond traditional security protocols. This exciting project also involves collaboration with world-class institutions, facilitating international knowledge exchange and research excellence.

Your role and goals

We are specifically looking for candidates who possess a deep passion for research and demonstrate the potential to excel in various cutting-edge research areas related to statistical learning for emerging communications systems. These areas encompass meta-learning for heterogeneous systems, networked federated learning, privacy-preserving machine learning, Byzantine-resilient learning, and robust resource-efficient distributed optimization. As a postdoctoral researcher in PLEDGE, you will lead pioneering research at Aalto University's Department of Information and Communications Engineering. Your primary focus will be developing innovative algorithms and theories for reliable learning in resource-constrained networks with irregular and unstructured streaming data. You will be actively involved in creating decentralized personalized learning solutions in multi-agent wireless networks, such as the internet of things (IoT) and cyber-physical systems (CPS). Your work will be instrumental in advancing the digital transformation of industries and societies, contributing to solutions for various real-world challenges.

Your network and team

As a valued team member, you will collaborate closely with Prof. Stefan Werner (IEEE Fellow) and the staff of DICE, who values a collaborative and supportive leadership approach, fostering an environment where creativity and innovation thrive, and engage in cutting-edge research projects focusing on artificial intelligence, trustworthy decentralized inference, and innovative machine-learning techniques specifically tailored for personalized learning on the edge. As an independent and self-motivated researcher, you will be able to collaborate with top-tier experts at Aalto University and engage in fruitful partnerships with international collaborators from esteemed institutions such as NTNU, Cornell, Linköping University, the University of Notre Dame, and Syracuse University.

Your experience and ambitions

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled researcher with a solid background in signal processing, statistical machine learning, optimization, wireless communications, or applied mathematics. Your expertise should be demonstrated through high-quality research publications, including at least one IEEE Transactions paper. Strong mathematical and programming skills, as well as proficiency in English, are essential. Your collaborative and proactive nature, coupled with excellent communication skills, will be key to successfully contributing to the team. In summary, the ideal candidate has:

  • A Ph.D. degree in Information and Communications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields.
  • A strong research background with expertise in one or more of the following areas: signal processing, statistical machine learning, optimization, wireless communications, or applied mathematics.
  • Proven track record of academic excellence demonstrated through high-quality research publications, including at least one IEEE Transactions paper.
  • Solid programming skills and experience with relevant tools and libraries.
  • A collaborative and proactive attitude with excellent communication skills
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity – apply now! The best-qualified candidates will be invited for an interview.

What we offer

The expected starting salary is approximately 3900 €/month, depending on experience and qualifications. The contract includes occupational health care services, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. As an employer, Aalto University provides excellent learning and development opportunities, and a commuter ticket benefit. Unisport offers versatile sports facilities and exercise services with a staff discount.

Discover exciting possibilities at DICE, the Department of Information and Communication Engineering. Engage in world-class research across various ICT aspects.
