Postdoctoral Researcher in Macroeconometrics

The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER

for a fixed two-year period starting on the 1st of September 2024.

The position is part of the project “Structural Analysis of Non-Gaussian Time Series with Applications to Climate and Macroeconomy” funded by the Research Council of Finland. The primary aim of the project is the development of new econometric methods related to non-Gaussian structural vector autoregressive (SVAR) models. In addition, the new and existing methods are employed to study the economic effects of climate change as well as economic and financial shocks. The project builds upon our previous research on SVAR models .

The successful applicant is expected to conduct theoretical and/or empirical research related to the general themes of the project. In addition, they are expected to actively contribute to teaching in the master’s and doctoral programmes in economics (up to 5% of the annual working time) and other research activities of the group.

Environment

The Faculty of Social Sciences is Finland’s leading research and education institute in social sciences, and the country’s most diverse social sciences faculty in terms of the range of its disciplines and fields of research. The Faculty has a strong international research profile and a number of international master’s programmes, and several of its disciplinary units have been rated among the top 50 in the world. The Faculty has approximately 500 research and teaching staff, and each year it awards some 300 bachelor’s degrees, 400 master’s degrees and more than 40 doctoral degrees.

The position is based at the Discipline of Economics (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-social-sciences/research/disciplines-and-research-centres/economics), which is part of the newly founded Helsinki Graduate School of Economics jointly with the Economics Departments of Aalto University School of Business and Hanken School of Economics. Its purpose is to promote high-quality economic research, to develop and coordinate master’s and doctoral level economic education and to promote cooperation in economics among the participating units. In addition, the Discipline collaborates closely with VATT Institute for Economic Research .

Qualifications

The appointee to the position must hold a doctoral degree in economics, econometrics, statistics, or another relevant field and have strong skills in quantitative methods and an excellent command of English. The default assumption is that the degree requirement must be met by the beginning of the employment. The appointee must have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as the teaching skills necessary for the position. Their research interests should be aligned with the objectives of the project and the research areas of the research group. Knowledge of the Finnish language is not required.

The annual gross salary range will be approximately €45,000 – €48,000, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. The employment contract will include a probationary period of six months. The chosen applicant is expected to reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki.
