Updated: 3 months ago
Deadline: 15 Mar 2023

The Department of Geosciences and Geography at the Faculty of Science is the leading research and education unit in its field in Finland. In addition to research in geology, geophysics and geography, research into seismology and official duties in the field of seismology is carried out at the department.

Faculty of Science invites applications for
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER in biogeography, macroecology, aquatic ecology or a related field starting from 1.6.2023 or as agreed for a fixed-term employment contract of two years.

The postdoctoral researcher will work on the project BIOISLAND Biodiversity loss in freshwaters under changing environment - lessons from island diatoms (2022-2026) funded by the Academy of Finland. Our aim is to examine freshwater diatom functional and taxonomical biodiversity patterns and drivers on islands and continents and explain and predict biodiversity variation using key ecosystem characteristics such as ecosystem area, age, isolation, land use and water chemistry. We use both observational global and regional diatom data sets and conduct field campaigns and experiments at smaller spatial scales. Overall, forthcoming results will increase our understanding of how ecosystem fragmentation affects biodiversity in freshwaters. Main collaborators of the project include top researchers from France, US and China. The research project is led by Professor Janne Soininen and work will be done in his Aquatic Community Ecology group.

We are seeking for a postdoctoral researcher to join the BIOISLAND project team in the Department of Geoscience and Geography. The main task of the researcher is to assemble and maintain global diatom database, analyze diatom and associated environmental data with R program and write scientific articles. To be successful in this position, applicants should have a PhD in physical geography, ecology, aquatic sciences or a related field, capability to analyze large datasets with R program and work with GIS programs. The specific focus of the position will be agreed with the candidate depending on his/her scientific background and interest. The successful candidate is expected to have excellent scholarly communication and writing skills in English, a proven publication record of high-quality scientific articles as well as the ability to conduct independent, theory-driven and creative research.
